The American Founders, and the Classical Liberals of Europe, were unanimous in their view that hereditary autocracy and the divine right of kings must end. Unfortunately they didn't have a much in the way of alternatives. In America, the Framers settled on a kind of democracy with its hands tied because that was the best they could come up with. But it was not long before the monster broke loose. And even the most ardent defender of American democracy today can only say "it's better than the alternatives", the cleanest dirty shirt, the prettiest waitress at Denny's, the lesser of evils. It obviously sucks. Is that really the best we can do? At this point a random lottery among names of people with certain qualifications would be much better than what we have now. It isn't enough to say "kings bad" without a viable alternative.
