Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette is expected to announce criminal charges today in the petition signature scandal that led to the abrupt end of Rep. Thaddeus McCotter's decade in Congress.

Felony and misdemeanor charges will be leveled against more than one individual, according to a source close to the investigation. The charges, to be announced at state offices in Cadillac Place in Detroit, are related to election fraud and will be "serious," the source told The News.

Schuette's office has questioned members of McCotter's office as well as at least one individual from the campaign of Kerry Bentivolio, the Milford Republican who launched a primary challenge against McCotter, R-Livonia. Bentivolio became the sole GOP candidate on Tuesday's primary election ballot when McCotter was disqualified.

Oh man....

I am certain that not one of us got a single signature for McCotter.

Not our type.

State: 4 staffers of ex-Rep. McCotter forged petitions, faked signatures in election fiasco

Four members of former U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter’s congressional staff were involved in various violations of election laws in connection with a petition scandal that ultimately led to McCOtter’s resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives, according to investigators for the state attorney general’s office.

The four were a “dysfunctional congressional staff that had completely lost its moral compass” and were “indifferent to the requirements of the law,” according to the investigators' report. The Free Press obtained the report this morning, just before attorney general Bill Schuette was to announce charges in the case.

We need to quash the Bentivolio rumor since it's ridiculous.

The article says the staffers had individuals falsely signed as petition circulatiors. It's quite possible that someone from Bentivolio's campaign had his/her signature forged and was questioned as a result. Being questioned doesn't equate to being complicit.

Well of course, that is their excuse to let it into the article. But why then the need to mention it so prominently in the article? I see it as the author trying to smear Bentivolio.
Asked if the charges involve another campaign, the source declined comment, saying the case is complicated. Bentivolio's campaign has denied any involvement, calling any allegations of a connection false.

Bentivolio won the primary election Tuesday against a serious write-in attempt from former state Sen. Nancy Cassis, R-Novi.
