Welcome to the year 2009! Twelve months ago who would have imagined that we would have a President Elect Barack Obama. Even more surprising is the senatorial race, where it appears ever more likely that Minnesota will have a Senator Elect Al Franken! A scant 46 votes may determine if the moderate senator Norm Coleman is re-elected or the far left pundit Al Franken becomes Minnesota’s next US Senator.

I will not play the blame game, nor will I become visceral against those in our party leadership that made critical mistakes this past year, however, we must learn from these mistakes. We must ask ourselves as a caucus some serious questions, and with God’s grace we must move forward, with our focus on the future and not the past.

In 2008 we witnessed an influx of, “New” Republicans, a group of young and old enthusiasts with core conservative ideals, but endowed with a deeper sense of libertarianism and constitutionalism than we might typically see attending a Republican caucus.

Some in the party, such as Carleton Crawford the Congressional District 5 Chair, and Barry Hickethier the Senate District 59 Chair reacted with curiosity to these new arrivals. They wanted to understand these new Republicans, to make them part of the caucus of the Grand Old Party. Both Carleton and Barry along with many others acted in the best tradition of the Big Tent Party. In the spirit of true leadership these individuals understand that inclusion and diversity make the party healthier and more robust.

Unfortunately, we also know a few in the party hierarch reacted to these newcomers in fear; fear does not emanate from the Almighty, instead it is a vessel that will carry the practitioners down a dark and isolated route. I have never envisioned the GOP as the party of fear and isolation, and this is not the route I want to travel.

We must now ask ourselves did we do all we could to welcome these new delegates, could we have persuaded just 47 more of these new Republicans to vote for Senator Coleman? Can we afford to immerse ourselves in fear, or are we willing to extend the hand of friendship?

It is time for a new course; a route that will grow the party, while maintaining the core Republican principles of our platform, and welcome new members and new debate into the caucus. That is why I am announcing here and now, to all my friends and family that I will be seeking the endorsement of the Senate District 59 Republicans to serve as their State Central Committee delegate.

Let us move to the future briskly, competently, and with our vision clear of distrust. Together we will be a more eclectic party, putting aside simple dichotomies, and working in unity to preserve the Republic.
