Has anyone else seen the documentary "Fat Head." I watched it earlier tonight and found it pretty interesting. It is basically critical of Supersize me and government intervention to steer us towards "healthier" foods.

Also, if you have netflix, you can watch it there

What do all of you health gurus think about this approach towards eating well? From what I understand the idea is to avoid sugar based carbohydrates and focus on animal fats and natural fats that are more native to the human diet historically.

The high fat/low carb diet is really the kind of diet that really works for me. I have eaten this way for years.

The human body uses fats for fuel more readily than carbs. A high fat diet gives you TONS of energy and keeps you lean. The more fat you take in, the less your body will hold on to.

My experience is studying nutrition for years and working in the supplement industry for some time.

One of the guys I really respect is Dr. Mauro DiPasquali. He created a diet called the "anabolic diet". It is probably the most effective way to lose fat that I have come across.

I am in my mid 30's and I am in better shape now than I was in high school, while all my buddies my age are getting love handles and pudge:) I attribute my staying lean to working out with weights and carb cycling diets like the Anabolic diet. Nothing more, nothing less.

Saw this was on Netflix, gonna check it thanks for posting.

But isn't all the animal fat unhealthy in the long run? My family has a history of heart problems due to plaque buildup so I'm hesitant to eat any meat other than chicken.

Humans evolved eating lots of animal fat. You NEED fat in your diet. But you want to watch the Omega3/omega6 ratio. Too much omega6 causes problems. Grass-fed, grass-finished beef, seafood, free-range chicken, all good! Grain, legumes, hydrogenated fat, bad. Simple!

According to Peskin you need about a 3 to 1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 and too much omega 3 causes problems.

I remember hearing the average person has 40(omega 6) to 1(omega 3) ratio, I was taught that 3:1 is the best ratio. Fish oil is a great way to balance out the ratio. Fish oil is actually a healthy fat.

Yes, the 3 to 1 ration is supposedly about right. But the average American has about ten times that much omega 6 as a result of the consumption of grain products, grain oils, and grain fed beef. So nearly everybody that isn't actively reducing consumption of grain, industrial grain oils, and industrial beef has an unhealthy preponderance of omega 6.

A Paleo diet, also known as paleolithic diet or caveman diet, is all about natural foods to help achieve great health and a perfect physique. The human body evolved for more than 2 million years with the food found in nature: game meat, fish, vegetables, wild fruits, eggs and nuts. The human race was thriving on this diet high in animal fat and proteins and low in carbohydrates, but things changed when we introduced unnatural foods to our bodies

If you have a Netflix streaming device, I definitely recommend it; it's one of the few titles out there that is both in HD and has 5.1 surround (how much it benefits from the latter, however...is...debatable x3 ).

According to Peskin, fish oil contains mainly derivatives of the parent omega 3 oil and will be toxic to your body and there is no evidence fish oil supplements improve health for that reason. Flax seed oil or hemp oil might be a better choice.

Great movie. The creator definetly has a libertarian slant and talks about how big gov't wants to force us to eat certain foods. It is really well done IMHO

He addresses food from many different aspects and i was quite surprised to say the least. I would recommend watching supersize me and then watching fat head.

I tried the akins diet after several yrs of an unsuccessful low fat diet. I lived on steak, bacon, sausage, butter, mayonaise, ranch dressing, eggs, fish, chicken, pork, and every other high fat, no carb foods for 2 yrs. I was a lean, mean machine! About 2 yrs into this diet, I was required to get a physical exam for my job. After the results were mailed to me, I called them to interpret the results. My cholesteral levels were...and I quote... "that of a 10 yr old" and my blood pressure was 84/66 (or something like that). I've never been so healthy in my life.
