Email scandal mars Christie's chances for presidency; governor apologizes

"Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee," Bridget Anne Kelly, one of three deputies on Christie’s senior staff, wrote to David Wildstein, a top Christie executive at the Port Authority, on Aug. 13, about three weeks before the closures. Wildstein, the official who ordered the closures and who resigned last month amid the escalating scandal, wrote back: "Got it."

Kelly’s feckless email is bound to go down in history as one of the all-time great political blunders. It becomes the smoking gun that kills Christie’s national political aspirations. Whether he knew about the plan, Christie hired the people and created the atmosphere that allowed this sort of behavior to flourish.

What kind of callousness does it take to snicker about the idea that schoolchildren are missing their first day of school?

PHOTOS: Highlights from the emails

“They are the children of Buono voters,” one official wrote, referring to Christie’s Democratic opponent, Barbara Buono, whom he trounced in the November election.

We do know that Christie blatantly lied about the closures, insisting that they were part of a fictional “traffic study.”

From OP.

FTA (emphasis added):
If Christie has a single shred of decency -- or a conscience -- he will apologize to the people of New Jersey in general and Fort Lee in particular. He will undertake a study to tote up the amount of money his administration cost citizens who were prevented from going about their business because someone had a political ax to grind. And he will donate that money to Fort Lee.

Given that any such "study" would be about as reliable as the Christie administration's integrity, I can only hope that that's a tongue-in-cheek joke. (But given the ardent credulity of certain journalists & pundits, this might actually have been offered as a serious suggestion ...)

So, basically, we have government officials, fucking up traffic on purpose and then laughing at us as we try to comply...that about sum it up?

Gee whiz, I'm shocked, shocked I tells ya.

*sigh*

And it will only get worse until we find the stones to do what has always needed to be done when tyrants start to run amok.

Happens every day... Remember when Obozo penalized Veterans for the government shutdown... when the Feds didn't even control the area in which the Vets were protesting. These guys are mental midgits. They abuse power at the fullest extent, when their numb nuts find a shred of it in their hands.

colonel Klink would be proud
[Updated 2:16 p.m. PST Jan. 8: In a statement released late Tuesday afternoon on his official website, Christie responded to the scandal: "What I've seen today for the first time is unacceptable. I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge. One thing is clear: this type of behavior is unacceptable and I will not tolerate it because the people of New Jersey deserve better. This behavior is not representative of me or my Administration in any way, and people will be held responsible for their actions."]

What an incredibly nasty, vindictive thing to do. This is the type of thing someone should resign over. Does New Jersey have a recall protocol?

Seems like the thread headline is wrong. He didn't apologize. He denied any responsibility. God I hope evidence comes to light that he was directly involved.

Following Spitzer, will Christie be the next Northeastern Governor to go from landslide to laugh track? More importantly, how many of the PTB already knew he had this ticking scandal bomb on his watch, waiting to go off? If so, was it the plan to keep him under control by holding this over him, but somebody blabbed too soon?

Is it a case of "pigs get fed, but hogs get slaughtered" where Christie is the hog---did Democrats deliberately give him a pass on his re-election, knowing they could implode his presidential chances by dropping this bomb 2 years from now during the primary race? Or was the set up by the Bush clan, designed to crush the Christie campaign (Jeb's only real establishment threat) at just the right time?

I say in retaliation we restrict his access to twinkies. Its only fair.

The problem with this sinking Christie's presidential ambitions is that it engenders the idea that Christie's behavior is not perfectly normal for an American president.

I am loving this scandal, if I could change one thing, I would have revealed it just a few weeks after he had announced his nomination, gathered all the endorsement from the likes of Scott Walker, Peter King, Jeb Bush, Rush/Hannity/Levine et al and bam, scandal hits the 24 hr news cycles and takes all of em down with it.

But this is still OK.

Just for the record, my prayers goes to the people who had to suffer/died or experienced great discomfort because of the actions of this thug. I do not love that part of the scandal.

Chris Christie threatened to stand in the middle of the highway —I mean, close the roads . . .
