Reason.com on Mia Love:
Mia Love

U.S. House of Representatives, Utah’s Fourth District

Mitt Romney has extremely limited appeal to serious libertarians, but Utah freedom-lovers may thank him for helping to carry Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love to victory in her race for Congress. Love, a fast riser in Utah politics, has attracted the support of establishment and anti-establishment Republicans alike not just because of her potential to make history as the first African-American Republican woman to be elected to Congress, but because of her clear western Republican views.

Love was born in Brooklyn and raised in Connecticut by her Haitian parents before moving to Utah and getting married. She started her political career in 2003 when she was elected to the Saratoga Springs City Council. In 2009 she successfully ran for mayor.

Love has been positively described as a “Trojan horse libertarian” by some conservative bloggers for her positions on homeschooling, federal control of land, and other issues. Liberals have attacked her for her backing entitlement reform and the privatization of student loans. Libertarians should enjoy Love’s serious talk about eliminating the federal Department of Education and Department of Energy.

Love does not support marriage equality but opposes the Defense of Marriage Act on the grounds that the federal government has no business in dictating how states should handle marriage.

Love is challenging Rep. Jim Matheson, a very conservative Democrat and six-term incumbent who voted to repeal ObamaCare and opposes marriage equality. There are more Republicans in the district’s newly drawn boundaries than before, and only a small portion of it overlaps with Matheson’s previous constituency. National Democrats and Republicans are pouring money into this race as they see it as extremely close. (Cook rates it a “toss up.”) Matheson has withstood strong challenges before, but that was when his district was constructed in his favor.

Mia Love on Ron Paul:

I would think Matheson is in big trouble come 2014 but he managed to some how survive last time.

More evidence that Republicans are willing to split their ticket for some reason as I imagine Romney won that district. Dem voters would never split their ticket for a conservative.

She's not the worse choice, but are there any libertarian Republicans running who are not “Trojan horse libertarian”? She seems like a run of the mill GOP candidate on the issues.

There aren't many run of the mill candidates advocating getting rid of federal departments.

She is the only electable choice in this race, both the establishment and the Tea Party will be heavily funding her campaign. If she likes Ron Paul, we can assume she agrees with many of his views. Someone should email her or something to ask about her stance on civil liberties, but I'm optimistic.

Matheson and Romney are from the same stock. Matheson is easily the most Republican of the Democrats now.

She lost her race in 2012 because of the libertarian candidate taking her vote, which makes me wary. There must be some reason they voted against her.

If there was, you could probably find it on Google or something. They voted against her because they did not know she was a liberty candidate.

She wasn't in my district, but I do remember someone at a town hall asking her something about congressmen using "insider information" ro invest in the stock market and she tried to fake an answer, but it was clear she had no idea what she was talking about.

You mean Libertarian? Many Libertarians will never vote for someone other than a Libertarian. Many voters vote for any third party candidate because they view any candidate from the major two parties as corrupt and they do this without studying the issues.

She lost by 768 votes. Mush less than the total that voted for the Libertarian candidate.

Jim L. Vein, the libertarian candidate won 6,439 votes. Those would have been more then enough to give her the win.

Because as they so often do, they put up a candidate without feeling out the GOP contenders and split the fucking vote.

Agreed. There are people who voted for a [worse] Libertarian candidate over Amash in MI-3 last year.

Wasn't there a real liberty candidate that she (narrowly) beat in the primary? I would be quite wary of her.

There are a lot of primary races with multiple liberty candidates. The South Carolina race for Tim Scott's seat right now has 3 different liberty candidates. Mia Love is black and has high name recognition so she has a much better shot at winning than other candidates.

Again, the fact that she's speaking at CPAC is probably to raise her profile. She just barely lost in 2012, so if she can retool her campaign, she may have a shot if there's a wave like there was in 2010. This is, of course, also assuming the public that elected Matheson in 2012 would not be there for him or turn on him come 2014. I haven't heard anything negative or bad about him recently.

That depends on who we consider a liberty candidate or not...I think Mia Love may be one, certainly she is at least 3 stars on the unofficial rating system in the 2014 candidate section, but why would 6.5k libertarians vote against her? It makes sense there would be a few who just always vote 3rd party, but I feel there has to be a reason for people voting against her. I voted against the Republican (and for the libertarian) in my district even though she was endorsed by FreedomWorks, because I felt she was a career politician with a dislikable personality. There could be something similar in play here.

Mia Love was one of Romney's chief advocates in the state.

If I lived in that district, I'd have voted for Vein both on principle and party. I would have hoped however Love beat Matheson although as a politico I knew there was a good chance it'd be close.

Yet another reason why we lose elections.

Keep in mind, you need to be a Romney advocate in Utah, especially when your Democratic opponent is more conservative than the stereotypical Rockefeller Republicans. Mia needed the Romney vote to help her win.
