Does anyone know of any Downtown Hotels that have ANY rooms at all available? I will be flying in, and do not desire to rent a car, especially since the activities will now be downtown.

All of the hotels on the rally site are pretty dang far outside the city...

I'd imagine it is tough getting rooms with the RNC going on at the same time. But try the Mall of America area and along the "light rail" route. The light rail goes from the Mall through the MSP airport to downtown.

Folks, it's extremely difficult finding anything within the 494/694 loop circling the core cities of Mpls/St. Paul but some relief should occur after 8/1 when the RNC releases its hold on rooms they don't need. In the meantime we've done the best we could with reserved blocks outside that loop primarily but still within 25-45 minutes of downtown, that's mostly what's in that lodging menu list. But most of the day 1 events are in fact on or outside that loop to the North, so if you're doing those that may not be a bad direction to look. Also, there should be a form up soon on the event site for locals here to offer up space in their homes as well w/contact info, so watch for that. But inner core and downtown hotels will not be cheap- but if you have the bucks to spend and want the heart of the metro be prepared to begin calling that first week in August, we'll be doing the same, for the purpose of adding more lodging to that list.

Also- that University Inn on the list is quite close to downtown, you can jump on a number 16 bus and be there in minutes, but don't expect particularly swank digs there, the price is very reasonable and reflects that.

I will be renting a car. Do you know of any good deals that are close to the airport?

If you are renting a car, have you tried Priceline?

I can do you one better than Priceline. Use http://www.momondo.com they are awesome!

I am staying at the Country Inn & Suites listed on the Campaign for liberty page. it's $82 a night after tax. That is an EXCILLENT deal for that hotel because they are always very clean.

Ya, just did a quick check on that website. Hotel Red Roof Inn Minneapolis Plymouth - is only $50 + tax. With a rental car, quick drive to downtown.

I want to use Momondo to book a car rental, but the site that comes up as the cheapest has everything listed in pounds/euros (GBP). 31 bucks a day is damn cheap though! I am tempted to do it . . . .

I just sent them an email asking if I have to use GBP or USD.

It would be a lot easier if we had a world currency . . . . . . . . . . . . lol NOT!!!!!

Thank you for that site. Yes, it is much better than priceline. :D

You just saved me $25 a day in car rental fees.

Update on the lodging closer in- we got a tip that the Richfield/Mall of America AmericInn, tollfree 866-661-7615 had a good amount of availability, which they do, close to 40 rooms open presently. But the forces of supply & demand are in play here in a big way. This hotel is by no means a 5-star operation, though their location is very near the Mall of America and the Airport which they feel makes them marketable at exorbitant rates that week. They tell me the Bloomington Comfort Inn directly across the freeway is getting $500/night for anything less than 4 nights, if that's actually true, I didn't check. They will set that aside as a block for us at $229/night but only if those reserving are staying a minimum 4 nights. If only staying 2 nights the price is $349/night. So we're declining that block for the moment at least, though any individuals within our group who want that location at any price may certainly go for it individually. You may possibly even find them more open to negotiation on price when only 1 room is at stake.

Another tip for those who want to shop outside our lodging list for more centralized location: The Holiday Inn people tell us that they do have a number - not necessarily a large number - of rooms at various locations that they are not free to set aside as a reserved block at this time, their block reservation availability is full. But they can deal with individuals, so a check with Holiday Inn for any particular location you're interested in may yield success, but no guarantee of that.

I have a question for you guys about the companies that site uses - one of them is ebookers.com and my son has a rental arranged with them (I've never heard of them before and I assume they are out of Great Britain because their price is in pounds). So does ebookers and all of these other companies under their umbrella actually have a small rental office at every airport in the world now, that they staff, like our major national companies do here? If not how do you go about connecting up with the actual vehicle? Hoping none of these overseas concerns will take us for an eride!

I am assuming it works the same way priceline, hotwire, etc. works. I guess they get a better deal because they are in another country?

Does the reservation look legit? I am guessing you'll go to the Budget/Hertz/etc or whatever counter when you get to the airport and give them you card and ID and they'll pul you up.

I've been online all day and found that the downtown hotels are all booked...at least until the RNC releases stuff on 8/1.

However, there is a really expansive mass transit system, maps located at http://www.metrotransit.org. Even the stuff "far outside the city" is accessible by bus.

I just posted over at C4L...there are rooms available at Red Roof Inns and Motel 6's closer in to the Rally than the blocked locations listed at R4R, well within the mass transit system. Plus, I'll bet a lot of people (like me) are bypassing the expensive plane fare and driving. My wife and I are driving out from Jersey the 1166 miles, and figure that our roundtrip gas will cost us the same as a one-way plane ticket....based on what we saw for prices. There will be plenty of us out there for you to hitch a ride with. As for me, look for Jersey plates on a white Outback with a "Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Ron Paul" bumper sticker.
I'll give you a ride Brother...

Also, the concert on Monday is not Downtown...it's at the Blaine National Sports Center Stadium 16 miles north of the Target Center...nearer to some of the blocked hotels. but, again, accessible by bus...

I did book a reservation at the Red Roof Inn in Burnsville.

If something should open up closer to the Target Center, I may change it.

Right now, if anyone is staying in Burnsville or Savage, and going to the events in Brooklyn Center on Sunday/Monday, I have a car and would be willing to give a ride.

I'm not driving into downtown Minneapolis on Tuesday.

Its crazy... all of downtown is booked!

Look Friday, maybe even Thursday night. You might want to try calling hotels directly rather than use an internet search on Thursday night. August 1st is the day that hotels are supposed to release rooms that have been reserved for the RNC.
