Does beer taste less bitter the more you drink it?

I turned 21 yesterday, and went out to a restaurant with some friends from work. I got a glass of Sam Adams 'Winter'-something with my meal. After drinking some, I made the same face I used to make when I took cold medicine (you know, that blegh face). :p

Does it get better, or do I just not like beer?

Was that the first time you had a beer? Sissy.....

It's an acquired taste. Being somewhat of an alcoholic myself, I can tell you that after getting a bit tipsy, the drinks go down easy, sometimes too easily. But what the hey, the purpose of drinking alcohol is to loosen up, or get piss drunk.

It doesn't get better from my experience so far, haha. i really don't like the stuff, but i've tried some microbrews that are tolerable. I usually just stick with captain morgan and coke.

If you're looking for taste you pretty much have to ignore the beer world. I think most people just put up with the taste. I usually went with malt beverages and mixed drinks with only a minimal amount of criticism.

I've had tiny sips of only two alcoholic beverages.

Busch Beer - nasty.
Mike's Hard Lemonade - taste way better (from only a taste though) cause it taste like, well, lemonade.

try non-beer alcoholic beverages.

Beer good, mkay?

Just stay away from mainstream American lagers and you'll be fine. English ale, German lager...mmmmmmm....

it is an aquired taste kinda like coffee ime

sam adams winter ale is a pretty strong one bitterness-wise to start with if i remember right and most common beers wont taste like that

ya might wanna try a light beer it will be alot less bitter and if ya dig that maybey try some other regular beers there is a huge variety of tastes

or do some long island ice teas or alabama slammers if ya want somethin that tastes good right off the bat

Yeah. Get some good beer. Like a Paulaner Hefeweisse or be prepared to make that face often... well at least until you get to about the 4th one.

My favorite beers are Sam Adams Boston Lager and Newcastle Brown Ale

But then I really like the flavor of hops.

You started out with the wrong beer for your first beer methinks. You went right for the uber-strong&bitter right off. It would be like trying Guinness Extra Stout right off for your first go.

Beer is certainly an acquired taste, but if you go for the most bitter beer you can find right out the gate you will probably never acquire the taste. 8-)

If you want to try beer that you might actually like, the try Anchor Porter or Genesee Cream Ale in that order.

That should be good for introduction purposes.

Past that, you can always go for a good cream stout! :D

Hops are the ingredient that add bitterness to beer. I believe winter lagers typically are brewed with a fair amount of hops.

I would say beer is definitely an acquired taste, and eventually you'll grow to like a strong flavor, but I'm not surprised you didn't like it on your first try.

The good news is there are tons of different beers, and they all have a different taste. Might want to try a lighter lager beer (no, I don't mean Miller Lite). It's always fun to try craft brews but as far as ones in most stores and bars I'd give a Heineken Light, or Stella Artois a shot.

:P I didn't have a desire to have it, so I was de-facto following a silly law.

Well, I guess that's proof I'm not a beer connoisseur. I just remember one of my older brothers really liking Sam Adams beer, and didn't know the level of bitterness differed.

Great. I'll look around, whenever I'm confident enough to go into a liquor store. :D

Well, there are so many beers out there, there's bound to be at least one that suits your taste.
But yes, in my experience... sometimes start with some really tasty mixed beverage or liquor, after you numb yourself a bit on those, a less palatable beer won't be so disagreeable. This is good when you are on a budget. Drink only a couple expensive yet tasty beverages, then drop down to the cheap and nasty... eg) Milwaukee's Best or Natural Light... ick :p :D

also if ya dont wanna blow money on beers ya might not like try to find a place that has a lot of different beers on tap (some places will have over 100 different beers on tap) and they will usualy let you sample them

just tell em what you said in your first post and theyll be able to give ya a few suggestions on what to try and you can experiment a little without emptyin your wallet

I don't remember having to aquire a taste for beer, of course, I don't exactly remember when the first time I drank one was. I was probably 12 or so. I love the taste of beer, but this is after a long teenage era of drinking anything from TW Samuels (the worst whiskey on the planet) to mouthwash. Nowadays, I hardly drink, but if I do it's a beer. Hard liquors make me gag just smelling them, and flavored beers (Mike's Hard Lemonade, Smirnoff Ice) make you bloated and sick after like 2. Well, they do me at least.

I would recommend to everyone here who hasn't tried it, to try some Shiner Bock, or other Shiner beers. My personal favorite is the Bohemian Black Lager. The Black Lager isn't for a beginner though. Shiner, being made in Shiner, TX is one of the few remaining really good American beers.

I definitely agree with you, Shiner is pretty damn good... I just recently tried that.
And Hi! glad to see you came out for a thread about beer! :D
