Dear Rand Paul: Stop trying to lose the GOP primary

My advice for Rand Paul after a couple of downright idiotic decisions by him and/or his people.

1. Do not meet with Al Sharpton. Meeting with Al Sharpton will not gain you any votes. Anyone who remotely likes Al Sharpton will never vote for you. He will not support you either. Meeting with Al Sharpton will not improve race relations. No one in the black community causes more racial strife than the despicable Sharpton. He isn't interested in peace or a colorblind society. His own means of existence is dependent on stoking the flames of the racial fires. And for heaven's sake, don't pose for a picture with him, especially if you are going to keep your eyes closed.

2. Do not go boost the Mississippi Republican Party. There are 50 state GOP parties, and you have to pick the one that torpedoed Chris McDaniel. Come on. I won't criticize you for not endorsing McDaniel during the primary, though I think you should have. But I understand why staying neutral makes sense. But under no circumstance should you have gone to help those scumbags. Scumbags who used the race card, intellectually progressive arguments, and downright lies to keep Thad Cochran in office. That, in the eyes of observant voters, is taking sides. All you emerged from the meeting with was a nice picture of you with a good chunk of the "stars and bars" in the backdrop. The MS GOP cronies will not support you either, but they will gladly use your name to fund raise.

Here is all of it: http://libertycircle.blogspot.com/2014/12/dear-rand-paul-stop-trying-to-lose-gop.html

You seem to forget that GOP are capable of voting for anyone with even the stupidest of pasts. Need I remind you of Mitt Romney? There is nothing that Rand can do in 2014 that will stop him from winning the 2016 nomination. He could literally come out today and say he supports toture and then tomorrow say he is against torture. It won't matter to the voters. Once they see how lame Christie and Bush are, Rand will run away with the nomination.

When the choice of defeating a liberal NY Senator is a liberal NJ Governor or a liberal FL Governor or a conservative KY Senator, the choice will be clear.

Ehh.... OP doesn't understand the bigger picture here
What is the bigger picture of meeting with Sharpton and helping the MS GOP? Anything that can possibly outweigh the harm it does with his relationship with the conservative base?

Agreed on everything, except for the incorrect use of the term "stars and bars"

http://www.usflag.org/confederate.stars.and.bars.html

Going to Mississippi is dumb now, the dumbest state to kiss GOP butt in.
Technicalities :)

I just noticed that the picture that Rand posted earlier with himself right next to the flag has been deleted. Although a couple still show have it featured less prominently.

Ron Paul once made the mistake of giving a speech that had a Confederate battle flag backdrop. It was used as evidence of racism quite often.

What is the bigger picture of meeting with Sharpton and helping the MS GOP?
Sharpton came out and said Rand could take black voters away from Democrats... that was the point. The narrative is now being written that only Rand can beat the Democrats. Remember, many Republican voters vote for who they think they can win.

Is anybody going to vote for Rand Paul because he met with Al Sharpton? Meeting with Sharpton doesn't add or take away from the narrative of Rand's outreach because Sharpton is not a credible actor, but heaven knows how many conservatives have the seen the picture of Rand and racist Al, adding it to their naughty list.

Sharpton, and ESPECIALLY the meeting with the MS GOP, is the kind of thing Mark Levin or Erick Erickson will bring up in 2016 and constantly rehash.

Here's an idea....Rand should meet with Artur Davis, who said this about his Sharpton meeting.

“I have a better idea for Rand Paul. Meet me in Montgomery, Alabama, where the modern civil rights movement was born, and let’s visit neighborhoods where ordinary people are struggling to raise their kids; not ‘leaders’ with cable shows, but families doing the best they can against tough odds.” He added, “We can visit churches in Montgomery that buried teenagers last summer who were killed not by cops but by other kids.”

That's a good idea.

Rand didn't ask for the meeting, Sharpton did. No different than when he met with Chris Mathews. Also I can't think of the last time the "Conservative's pick" won. Usually it is the person who is presumed to have the best chance of winning the general.

Is this meant to be sarcasm?

You are missing the point... Sharpton's reaction is writing the narrative that Rand is the only one that can beat the Democrats.

Not at all. We all saw in 2012 how GOP voters that claimed to be tea party people backed establishement tools like Frothy. I have seen people bitch about Ron Paul putting in earmarks on bills and then turn around and support Santorum that was also in favor and used earmarks.

Was there anything that Romney could have done to not get the nomination in 2012?

The GOP voters just want to beat Democrats and they don't care if the candidate is a huge flip-flopper, they don't care if they are an insane war monger. They just want to win.

Rand is the winner for 2016.

Voters have an amazing ability to disconnect and make excuses for their votes.

Do they?

i seem to recall some early polls that showed Ron Paul as the only GOP contender who was likely to beat Obama in 2012. And yet, they anointed Romney anyway....with the assistance of RPI.

That's because the narrative was that Ron couldn't win the primary

There was no such narrative. That seems to be only what YOU have been saying.

The media hardly spoke of him at all; yet Ron did quite well in spite of a lackluster campaign and media blackout.
