Police are allowed in some circumstances to install hidden surveillance cameras on private property without obtaining a search warrant, a federal judge said yesterday.

CNET has learned that U.S. District Judge William Griesbach ruled that it was reasonable for Drug Enforcement Administration agents to enter rural property without permission -- and without a warrant -- to install multiple "covert digital surveillance cameras" in hopes of uncovering evidence that 30 to 40 marijuana plants were being grown...

And here I thought the article would be about citizens getting permission to film their overlords without needing to inform them.

Silly me

This is just incredible. In order to install surveillance, they first have to trespass illegally. How far away from our founding principles have we gotten?

The article makes it sound like this is all about technological advances. This is just about governmental advances. We are getting real close, folks.

This is utterly outrageous. That judge needs to be fired, and the ruling must be overturned. Of course the DEA and drug war are involved - primary culprits and vehicles for the dismantling of individual rights.

Two defendants in the case, Manuel Mendoza and Marco Magana of Green Bay, Wis., have been charged with federal drug crimes after DEA agent Steven Curran claimed to have discovered more than 1,000 marijuana plants grown on the property, and face possible life imprisonment and fines of up to $10 million.
Life imprisonment, yet absurdly corrupt and thieving bankers get off scott free or a couple years. Obviously speaking to the choir here, but this is not the land of the free.

Treasonous bastard (along with the judge):

Does this mean I can put a camera in the judges house without him knowing it? After all, we are all police to some extent.

Agreed. I think we need to set up surveillance cameras in the office of every politician, every judge, every bureaucrat, and every lobbyist in the country, top to bottom. The feed can be live-streamed 24-7. They might think they're clever and start working from home, so we need to set up surveillance cameras there too. And their cars also. Every phone call they make should also be recorded as well as live-streamed.

Yep, after all, they work for us.
