A controversial Indian general who had glorified use of human shields in Indian Kashmir, a tactic reportedly copied from Israeli military that in turn had faced its own charges of war crimes in Palestinian territories, has passed away. Chopper carrying him crashed in the Tamil region that in the past decades had seen violent insurgency and claimed life of an Indian Prime Minister who was killed by a Tamil suicide bomber. No reports of foul play in this case.
Some wild conspiracy theories also in social media claiming that this crash of Russian made Mi-17 chopper happened a day after Putin visited India for discussing sale of S-400 Russian missile system amid US warning and sanctions threat over such a purchase. Seemingly baseless and unplausible theory because Deep State in the current social justice movements era is now strictly prohibited from causing loss of innocent life for achieving strategic objectives.

Following dated photo shows him seated with another junior retd military officer who had recently created controversy of his own by calling for destabilization of Afghanistan post US exit by instigating violence there:

"the best part is strengthen Tajikistan, fund Tajikistan, and create an environment of anarchy inside Afghanistan... because it cannot be stabilized, not by America, not by China. Keep it boiling, keep it boiling so nobody can settle down including China and keep your influence there by giving money to selected people... keep Afghanistan unsettled, give large amounts of money.."

"So many people educated in India were there in Afghanistan.... even Karzai was educated (in India).. We will not be starting from scratch, less than 8 minutes to fly into Kabul and bomb it.. and if we get F-35s from Americans, I think we can do it very easily"

Israel trains India: Use of human shields to defend against stone throwers

human-shield-social-2.jpg

On 9 April, a Kashmiri man called Farooq Ahmed Dar was trussed to the spare tyre at the front of a jeep and driven on a five-hour journey through several villages at the head of an army convoy.
He had just voted in a by-election for the national parliament when he was picked up by an army patrol.
He was allegedly beaten before he was lashed to the vehicle with a sign saying "This is the fate that will befall stone throwers" pinned to his chest.
The use of Mr Dar as a human shield was criticised around the world. Amnesty International described it as "cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment amounting to torture".
The Indian government announced there would be an inquiry into the incident but on 22 May, before the inquiry had been completed, the army awarded Major Gogoi a commendation medal for, it said, his "sustained efforts during counter-insurgency operations".

What does the decision to award the medal tell us about the situation in Kashmir?

This incident shows just how difficult India is finding it to keep a lid on unrest in Kashmir.
Indian army sources have told the BBC that morale among soldiers stationed in the valley is very low. Many soldiers are becoming increasingly uncomfortable with their role in Kashmir, saying they fear they are effectively becoming an army of occupation.

Biden administration says no sanctions' waiver to India over S-400 missile deal with Russia

India's S-400 missile system problem
By John Bolton 11/10/21
India’s nearly completed, $5.43 billion purchase of Russian S-400 air-defense systems raises serious obstacles to closer politico-military relations between Washington and New Delhi. It requires rigorous strategic thinking to avoid hampering deeper policy relationships within the Asian “Quad” (the U.S., India, Japan and Australia), compromising America’s stealth technology or jeopardizing seemingly mundane but often critical issues of interoperability among national militaries. Finding mutually acceptable solutions has enormous implications; so does failure.
But India’s S-400 purchase, formalized in October 2018, was a mistake, even from its own strategic perspective. New Delhi directly challenged earlier U.S. legislation intended to block significant Russian weapons sales, and which provided very limited presidential waiver authority. Especially unfathomable in why India would acquire the same system China was buying, risking that Beijing’s cyber warriors, perhaps exploiting Moscow-inserted back doors, could cripple their defenses in a crisis. Turkey’s similar purchase of S-400s, and the dynamics among the three transactions, bear particularly on the current campaign to waive sanctions against India.

Twitter sees link between Rawat crash, Taiwan accident. Chinese media isn't pleased

Conspiracy theories have emerged after the crash of an Indian Air Force helicopter on Wednesday killed chief of defence staff general Bipin Rawat and 12 others.
Many social media users alleged China could have orchestrated the incident, given the ongoing standoff with Ladakh. Many of these conspiracy theories referred to a similar accident in Taiwan last year.
In early January 2020, Taiwan's chief of general staff general Shen Yi-ming and seven others were killed when the helicopter they were on crashed in mountains near Taipei. Shen was the senior-most official in the Taiwanese military and a key figure in its air force. The helicopter that crashed was a US-made UH-60M Black Hawk.

Eminent strategic analyst Brahma Chellaney was among those who referred to the Taiwan crash on Wednesday evening. He tweeted, “Gen. Rawat's death has an eerie parallel with the helicopter crash in early 2020 that killed Taiwan's chief of general staff, Gen. Shen Yi-ming, and seven others, including two major generals. Each helicopter crash eliminated a key figure in the defense against PRC's aggression.”

However, he emphasised the crashes were not necessarily connected. Chellaney wrote, “The strange parallel doesn't mean there was any connection between the two helicopter crashes or an outside hand. If anything, each crash has raised important internal questions, especially about maintenance of military helicopters transporting top generals.”
Interestingly, China's state-run Global Times took note of Chellaney's tweet. The Global Times handle claimed Chellaney's view was akin to suspecting the US was involved in the crash that killed Rawat due to its opposition to India's decision to buy the S-400 missile system from Russia.

Global Times tweeted, “This view is like suspecting the US played a role in the crash because India and Russia are moving forward with the delivery of a Russian S-400 missile defense system, which the US strongly opposed.”
