Complaint filed in heated 11th Congressional District GOP primary

A former Oakland County Republican Party chairman is asking the Federal Election Commission to review the campaign filing statements of a Republican candidate for Congress.

Paul Welday said Wednesday that Kerry Bentivolio’s campaign finance statements show excessive contributions, unjustified payments to himself, and questionable loans and record keeping.

Bentivolio, 60, from Milford, is the only Republican on the Aug. 7 primary ballot to succeed former Rep. Thaddeus McCotter in the 11th Congressional District representing western Oakland and Wayne counties.

Welday is among the county Republicans who have instead backed former state Sen. Nancy Cassis as a write-in for the GOP nomination in Tuesday’s primary.

He held a news conference Wednesday afternoon to announce the complaint filed with the FEC.
