There’s nothing like a juicy Jersey tomato in the summer — especially when you get it fresh from a local farm rather than the grocery store.
It’s a concept Alex Gassner, one of the youngest and newest farmers in South Jersey, is trying to instill in about 50 families this season.
“I kind of woke up one day and said I was going to be a farmer,” said the Woodbury resident and owner of Sweet Pea CSA, LLC.
It’s the second year the 24-year-old will be renting about three acres of land on a sprawling farm on Fox Run Road just off Route 55 in Deptford Township, Gloucester County.
There, among the horses and farmhouses owned by family friends Liz and Andy Moore, Gassner will spend the next six months growing more than 50 varieties of organic fruits and vegetables to be enjoyed by local families that sign up for the community-supported agriculture (CSA) club.
Shareholders, as they’re called, sign up before the season starts and for a fee — $560 for a full share for a family of four — they’ll be able to come to the farm every week for 20 weeks to get “the best produce you cannot buy at a supermarket,” according to Gassner.
