Colorado considers ban on using welfare cards at marijuana dispensary ATMs


DENVER (AP) -- Welfare money or food stamps for marijuana? It's an urban legend that won't go away in Colorado, and state lawmakers this year are poised to pass a law clarifying that public benefit cards can't be used at dispensary ATMs.

A bill facing its first hearing next week in the state Senate would add marijuana businesses and strip clubs to the list of Colorado businesses where electronic benefits cards — called EBTs — can't be used to withdraw cash. Liquor stores, casinos and gun shops already have such limitations.

Republican Sen. Vicki Marble said marijuana dispensaries need to be added to avoid possible federal intervention if there's evidence of public benefits being spent on pot.

So the EBT holder goes down the street to the local Walgreens, pulls out $50.00 and comes back to the shop. Problem fixed. Ya but then you have to leave the establishment and when you come back, depending on the establishment, you have to pay the cover again. It's also super inconvenient to do this in the middle of a private lap dance.

We had a term for this in the GA. "Solution in search of a problem." I doubt people are buying cannabis with EBT cards. Nevertheless I don't care if they pass this law. Put as many restrictions as you like on "free" money from the government. Maybe that will inspire people to get away from the restrictions by getting off of welfare.

A drug test for receiving welfare will cost more and invade privacy. The compliance cost for this will be almost nothing, and not invade privacy. Don't care x100.

Yeah, this is the other reason I don't care. People shouldn't be drawing cash off of a supplemental nutrition program anyway. Here in NC only certain foods in the grocery store are even eligible for SNP while others are not. The number of ATMs where one can draw cash out of SNP should be zero. I'm not going to feel bad they reduce it by 20 or so.

That doesn't sound like appropriate management to me. Dark rice, beans, potatoes and onions are far more healthy for similar prices. Potatoes are $2-$3 for 10 lb. Rice in bulk is very cheap. Money should go to food and other necessities in life. Lots of people struggle and cannot afford strips. Yet the poorest people that don't work at all should be able to have strips?

Reducing state and federal welfare to poor Americans is a low priority for me. I'm much more interested in self-defense, cutting taxes, education reform, foreign welfare... that still doesn't mean I don't have a problem with people abusing the system to buy luxury items that many in the middle class have to go with out from time to time.

Sorry, I guess it is just my working poor mentality. People should work hard and better themselves, not commit fraud.

I did not know that. I remember when people traded grub stubs for cash or a bag of weed. The ATM thing sounds like a better deal. Party on.

I think EBT cards are used for much more than just foodstamps/SNP stuff. IIRC It is also can be where your money is deposited for SSI, welfare, etc. So it makes sense you can withdraw that kind of cash using it.
