Bitcoin maverick Cody Wilson calls out Libertarians on their home turf

Cody Wilson created the Liberator 3-D printed gun and is developing Dark Wallet, a Bitcion wallet intended to store and send the encrypted currency outside of government regulation. Michael del Castillo

The UpTake: Cody Wilson, a key 3D and Bitcoin figure who is working on ways to keep the government's eyes away from tracking the currency, gets noticed at a forum for Libertarians and anarchists.

The man who created the Liberator 3-D printed gun is a bit of a folk hero among certain groups of Libertarians and anarchists. So when Cody Wilson called out his peers on stage at the Liberty Forum in New Hampshire earlier today, people took note.

On a panel called "Leading by Example: How principles of liberty have made technology what it is today," Wilson and his peers were asked what the people in the audience should do if he ended up arrested or dead. The 26-year-old entrepreneur and activist didn’t take kindly to the implication that he might become a martyr for the Libertarian cause. In his own way, he refused to answer the question.

“Why hold you up to something that you know you would shrink away from?’ he asked the moderator. “Is anyone prepared today to do the things that are required? Why aren’t we marching on the White House? Instead we’re circle jerking at a conference in New Hampshire.”

Attendees of the conference, which has largely focused on Bitcoin and other anti-regulation business ideas, applauded Wilson’s reaction.

In May of last year, Wilson release the Liberator gun, which was quickly downloaded hundreds of thousands of times. Since then he’s partnered with Amir Taaki to create Dark Wallet, a Bitcion wallet intended to store and send the encrypted currency out of reach from the possible, and likely, Bitcoin regulations currency being discussed in New York and other states.

In a conversation after the event Wilson told me he didn’t want to be seen as hating on the conference generally speaking, but that he found the particular line of questioning self-indulgent, even though he respected the moderator.

Philip Boncer, consulting pharmaceutical engineer, and volunteer at the Forum said the purpose of the conference was to “gather fuel and resources to reach out elsewhere,” though he acknowledged that Libertarians, like anyone who adheres to a particular ideology, run the risk of getting caught up in talk instead of action.

It is nice that even in New Hampshire, where more liberty Doing Activism is actually happening than anywhere else, there are still constant reminders that while talking is important, doing is also important. I'm not personally into marching on DC or anything anymore, but I like the analogy. Thanks for the reminder folks. We can all use reminders from time to time. A great event. Really energized me!

I'm thinking about buying a house up there. Not a permanent one. Just one to maybe have in case I want to move up there. Or even for just part of the year.

Good idea, especially if you have money. I believe Maine is the #1 state for 2nd houses and NH is the #3 state. Vermont being the #2 state. It's common for Republicans from MA to have a 2nd house in NH. In some of the communities, close to 1/2 the houses/cabins are 2nd houses. There are lots of 3 or 2 season cabins in NH in lake communities. There are some 2nd home communities that are 3 or 2 season on the ocean, also.

Cody Wilson is a crypto-anarchist and free-market anarchist, and activist, best-known as a founder/director of Defense Distributed, a non-profit organization that develops and publishes open source gun designs, so-called "Wiki Weapons", suitable for 3D printing. Described by Wired as "one of the most dangerous people in the world" his latest project is Dark Wallet, a browser based Bitcoin wallet.

In this talk at Liberty Forum 2014 he discusses the technology and philosophy behind the world's first 3D printed gun as well as the response Defense Distributed received from the Federal Government.
