CJ on Fancy Farm, Rand, Conway, and how the rule against swearing = "The Conway Rule"

Excerpts supporting a point I want to make:

" Fancy Farm has become a test of will for candidates who sometimes struggle just to make it through their speeches — often over the din of hecklers and chants from their opponents’ supporters, who are sometimes bused in from across the state. "

and

" Larry Forgy, the GOP’s gubernatorial nominee in 1995, said he spoke at Fancy Farm 11 times over the years, in different capacities.
“When I started, it was almost all a Democrat crowd,” he said. “In the earliest days, you just tried to get through the day so they couldn’t say you were too cowardly to come.”
But as the Republican crowd grew, Forgy said it became a lot more fun."

We KNOW labor et al are busing people in. I hope Rand will have a large crowd as well. This won't be like last year where he was the newcomer and people didn't focus on him much. He IS the target this year.

From all accounts it was the Rand Paul crowd that was really getting to him yelling. He just thought it was Dan's people. I'll be there but, I probably be a spectator and not taunt. But, I will cheer loudly for Rand.

I wasn't thinking about taunting, I just want it clear the kind of support Rand has.

Do people in KY say: curse or cuss? My wife always makes fun of me when I say "cuss" she says it makes me sound like the country hick I grew up as.

I rarely hear cuss, but the song Sr-71 - Right Now uses cuss:

She taught me how to trust
And to believe in us
And then she taught me how to cuss....That bitch!
It's over

They aren't from Kentucky. Wiki just told me they are from Maryland.

You guy miss the point. He was quoting Wendell Ford (Known racist he campaigns with) and messed up the line. Wendell always said "tough son of a gun."

If one isn't taking the name of God in vane, I don't see anything they say as 'cussing' or 'swearing' but rather profanity.

It's a church event.

No joke. It's a on the catholic church grounds. It's kind of rude to cuss around the church folk and children.

Well, the Bible even has the words 'hell' and 'damn' so what are they so worried about? Those are not bad words.

You don't want children to hear that. I know I'd rather not have my child hearing that.

That's probably because some people made a decision that those were bad words. There is nothing Biblical that says those are bad words, so just how do people suddenly get the idea they are?

Think a bit. We can have common sense without the Bible giving us specific instruction. Hell and damnation are unimaginably horrible and tragic concepts - the most unpleasant things one could even contemplate. Why on earth would one casually mention those in conversation?

No one even thinks about what they mean when they say them. One could argue that their casual use has contributed to society not taking the subject seriously. I personally would also argue that profanity is a crutch for people with weak vocabularies who have trouble conveying their feelings politely (ie Conway.)

Fancy Farm is hosted by a Catholic parish (St. Jerome's) and I'm frankly pleased they made that decision.

So am I. Wouldn't want to be impolite to our hosts.

In my opinion, people who say "Oh my God." are the ones who don't realize what they are saying.
I often wonder if they are saying that because they saw something and think perhaps that is their god.

Heh, I agree. I was teaching a Japanese friend to speak English once, and apparently that expression is so common that they have picked it up over there! Not only did she use it, but I've heard it in jpop songs as well. I had difficulty getting across why I disapproved of it, since everyone else seemed to use it. :o
