The little faggots got their own Board of Decency...

*sigh*

I want no more talk from our Canadian brothers about how much better things are north of the border.

Money for Nothing’ too offensive for Canada

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has ruled that Dire Straits’ 1980s hit Money for Nothing is too offensive for Canadian radio.

The ruling, released Wednesday, was in response to a complaint against St. John’s radio station CHOZ-FM. The listener complained that the word faggot – which appears three times in the song is “extremely offensive” to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

The council is an independent body created by Canadian radio and television broadcasters to review the standards of their content.

The award-winning song was the first single off of Dire Straits’ album Brothers in Arms and has been an international music staple for 25 years.

The council ruled that the song contravenes its ethics code which states: “broadcasters shall ensure that their programming contains no abusive or unduly discriminatory material or comment which is based on matters of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status or physical or mental disability.”

It ruled that “faggot,” when used to describe a homosexual, is “even if entirely or marginally acceptable in earlier days, is no longer so.”

Offending Lyrics from Money for Nothing, by Dire Straits:

The little faggot with the earring and the makeup

Yeah, buddy, that’s his own hair

That little faggot’s got his own jet airplane

That little faggot, he’s a millionaire

Another forum I was reading mentioned that it's hard to find an uncensored version on YouTube these days. I haven't tried...

This would make them piss their pants:

From "Black Flag" from way back in the day, 1982 I think.

bflag_police-story_f-up.jpg

This fucking city is run by pigs
They take the rights away from all the kids

Understand we're fighting a war we can't win
They hate us, we hate them
We can't win, no way

Walking down the street
I flip them off
They hit me across the head with a billy club

Understand we're fighting a war we can't win
They hate us, we hate them
We can't win, no way

Nothing I do, nothing I say
I tell them to go get fucked
They put me away

Understand we're fighting a war we can't win
They hate us, we hate them
We can't win, no way

I got to court for my crime
Stand in line, pay bail
I may serve time

Understand we're fighting a war we can't win
They hate us, we hate them
We can't win, no way.

I never felt they were talking about a gay person in the song. I always believed (and still do) they called him a faggot because he had long hair, makeup and flashy clothes which was common of many 80's bands. Look at Dee Snider of Twisted Sister and he is straight as they come.

Stupid PC garbage!

I really don't understand how it could be offensive to lesbian or transgender individuals...I always thought "fag"and "faggot" were terms to describe a male homosexual.

Either way, very obvious Canada doesn't have a 1st amendment, or, if they do, it's considerably weaker than our own.

I hope the guys from South Park pick up on this. They love to beat the shit out of Canada and well, for this they deserve it. That songs a staple of 80's rock.

From the Canadian Constitution:

"Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:

(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;

There is "freedom of expression", but at the same time, "hate propaganda" falls under the criminal code. If they had truly bothered to listen to the song, they would have realized that it is not hate propaganda, but the song is indeed taking a shot at those who would use that offensive term. Context is everything.

Wrote the ministry of truth and my member of parliament:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing you to express my displeasure with the recent ruling banning radio play of the song "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits. In a free and democratic society, it is not the role of government to regulate what is "proper" and what is not, specifically with regards to music, film or other media. That is the democratic duty of the consumer. They can "vote" on whether the material is acceptable by choosing to listen to, watch or read whatever media type of media is in question. Alternatively, they can choose not to, thereby expressing discontent and sending that signal to the producer. It is these individuals who are best equipped to make those decisions.

The completely indiscriminate nature of this ruling violates the spirit of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms:

(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;

I ask that the ruling be reconsidered and also that all future censorship attempts which contravene the above passage be aborted immediately. In addition, I ask for the immediate resignation of the parties responsible for this travesty.

Fucking outrageous.

The owner of that radio station should play nothing but the Mentors for a week straight as a protest. Perhaps whoever complained would rather listen to their song Judgement Day. Or maybe even the Feederz song Jesus Entering From The Rear (the version on the Let Them Eat Jellybeans compilation is far superior to the version on the album that had the sandpaper on the front cover). As per AF, Black Flag's Police Story is a good suggestion too, but perhaps the song Rise Above would be even better for this particular occasion.

lol, so pathetic. There are so many Politically correct pussies up here, it's very annoying.

I'm just glad the internet exists. Everytime they try to regulate the internet, they fail, and they fail fucking hard. If I ever feel like listening to this song, I know where I can find it, government approved or not.
