Can Marco Rubio repair his standing with conservatives by pushing a hardline abortion ban?

In breaking the news about Rubio’s decision to sponsor the bill, the Weekly Standard’s Fred Barnes explained:
He is viewed as a likely candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. But he’s recently prompted serious criticism by Republicans over his support for the immigration reform bill that passed the Senate last week. His front-and-center role on a key anti-abortion measure is likely to ease concerns about him among GOP voters.

Could this actually work? Frankly, if the social conservatives are stupid enough to fall for this they deserve everything that's coming their way, including a mandatory LGBT sex education for their children and taxpayer-funding abortions.

It won't work because immigration is a far bigger issue to these people than abortion. Even people who've been in the fight for a while acknowledge it's very unlikely to change, where our immigration policy is very much hanging in the balance.

I don't think that's the case. Can you imagine a Senate Republican from a Southern state voting for taxpayer-funded abortions and getting away with it? But that's what essentially happened on immigration. The two senators from Tennessee both voted for Schumer-Rubio, and Tennessee is a Southern redneck state.

Hardline pro-lifers will go for Mr Santorum in primaries. They will then turn to Rubio when Santorum drops out.

There have been GOP senators recently (Scott Brown, Olympia Snowe) who have pretty much 100% pro choice voting records. Even the republicans who are pushing this immigration fraud are trying to frame it as being conservative and would never take a stance that'd get them a 0% rating from an immigration think tank in the way those senators have a 0% rating from NRLC.

This happens every time immigration reform comes up. It never ends up mattering at election time.

The word "Conservative" these days increasingly looks like a colloquial for old, bitter (white) people clinging to their old ways and their religion, preaching sermons against abortion etc., who also want the government to stay out of their Medicare. lol

Some kind of a symbolical abortion ban, even one that doesn't actually become a law, might be enough to win them over.

That's the real issue. Rubio shored up his support with those people. And they count more than the base. Come primary time, most voters will be convinced that there are only 2-3 candidates who have a chance of winning, and these 2-3 will all be people who have the backing of the big money.

This is why Rubes was happy to stick his neck out for this "cause" and SCREW the Tea Party and Jim DeMint who got him into the Senate and funded his original campaign. His loyalties have changed because he has delusions of sitting in the White House.
