California lawmaker's bill goes further than Gavin Newsom on COVID vaccine mandate for schools
In October of last year, California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued the nation’s first — and only — COVID-19 vaccine mandate for schoolchildren. Under that mandate, all children attending school in person across the state must receive the vaccine once the Food and Drug Administration fully approves the shot for the 5-11 and 12-16 age groups, “consistent with existing procedures for other vaccines.”
Among those existing procedures is the state’s personal belief exemption for certain vaccines. Currently, the personal belief exemption exists only for flu and HPV vaccines, but not for measles, mumps, rubella and other diseases. A new bill introduced by state Sen. Richard Pan would add the COVID-19 vaccine to that mandatory list and thus wipe out the personal belief exemption.
“Parents need confidence and certainty that their child’s school is safe and can be in-person,” Pan tweeted Monday. “The most effective way to keep schools open and safe is to ensure the COVID vaccination rate of students and school staff is as high as possible.”
