Rick Santorum or Ron Paul win South Carolina. (Ranking: 2.)
AFTER SOUTH CAROLINA:
They slog it out. Romney loses South Carolina, and Gingrich wins or keeps it close in Florida, setting the stage for a two-man battle through at least Super Tuesday on March 6 (Ranking: 6.) "Everyone involved in politics -- activists in 46 non-early states, consultants and vendors, the media, the commentariate -- has a rooting interest in seeing a contest and a fight that goes on for at least a while," said former New Hampshire GOP chair Fergus Cullen. "No one wants to tune in for the Super Bowl and see it 28-0 at halftime.:
Romney rebounds from South Carolina (win or lose) and triumphs in Florida to get back on track. (Ranking: 5). Romney's team had hoped to put the race away this month, but is now lowering expectations. "This is a long slog," Romney surrogate and former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu told reporters Friday. "I think you're going to see the same kind of long slog that you saw in '76, with (Gerald) Ford and (Ronald) Reagan, that it took the whole thing to win."
Gingrich implodes: An extended race gives the volatile Gingrich more time to blow himself up (Ranking 4). Santorum re-emerges as the alternative to Romney (Ranking: 3.) And don't forget about Paul (Ranking: 2.)
