All this childish use of "standards", and it is never questioned. And the statement about superintendents is just precious. Firstly, in the places I've taught such people are like Stalin. In the mid-80s, NYC school superintendents were making $120K/year and held literally despotic control over how the schools were run. They could close down a school immediately and leave it that way for as long as they deemed necessary. One that I knew of had had a complete machine shop installed for HIS USE ONLY. So yeah, these are the people whose words this Brian Ellis nitwit should be taking seriously.
Nothing to see here, move along... not telling us HOW to teach. Big deal when they tell you WHAT to teach. It's a lie anyhow because when you dictate the what, the how is pretty intimately tied in by way of the testing... the STANDARDIZED testing.
There is a conspiracy in all this - a conspiracy of stupidity, and it's not all "them", either. That we are not threatening to lynch these "educators" is on parents.
I find it most curious to note how the educators have in a very real sense been tacitly painted in a way similar to that of doctors, psychiatrists in particular, in that the unstated presumption is that of nearly absolute authority by virtue of the similarly presumed expertise. Shrinks have become the new priesthood and this is made manifest in law. For example, the whole issue of so-called "mental illness" in relation to one's right to keep and bear arms. What the shrinks say, goes, becomes law, and makes instant felons out of entire classes of our neighbors. So it has been with "educators", whose tacitly absolute authority in terms of what is to be taught and how the content of such teaching is to be verified, is never seriously challenged in any substantive ways save for small pockets of local resistance now and again. None of that resistance matters, though, because the vast and overwhelming majority of young people are firmly in the clutches of these dangerously deluded maniacs whose misguided good intentions have been steadily reducing the American meaner to a state of perpetual childhood, unable and UNWILLING to think and be responsible for himself in the truer senses of the terms. He is accountable only within the narrowest terms, so tightly reduced as to qualify as technical jargon - the jargon of the tyrant's command language for utter compliance as obedient subjects.
It should be understood that in the broadest sense of basic intellectual structure the human race has been reverted a good one thousand years. If histories are to be believed in even small measure, the European commoner of 1000 years ago was in a very real sense an idiot, artificially fashioned through the machinations of the Roman church including the prohibition against non-glergy learning to read and that against reading the scriptures. The kings interest (king in the broadest abstraction) was for compliance and compliance was not optimally obtained when the people were learned in a broad measure. Oh yes, they were learned as blacksmiths, farmers, shit shovelers, seamstresses, butchers, and so on. Their avenues of intellect, however, were very intentionally trimmed short in the way a skilled horticulturalist clips the roots of his bonsai trees such that they never grow beyond a measure. This all changed in slow fashion with the Renaissance, the Age of Englightenment, and later the Industrial Revolution, where the scope of average individual awareness was redoubled. I do not see how expanding the horizons of humanity can be a bad thing, given the abundant evidence suggesting how bad things are when minds are kept artificially narrow and the spirit small in comparison.
The tyrant, however, is not interested in the quality of the serf save that he remains narrowly corralled and obedient within that close channel. This Common Core disease is the latest installment in what appears to be a program intentionally designed to revert the upcoming generations to that thin slipway of mind. By refocusing the mind in these ways that tell people what and how to think, Theye are literally putting the American people back into the state in which their forebears of a millennia ago were forced by the despots and tyrants of that time. We are being lead as lambs to intellectual slaughter by a process gussied up to appear as its very opposite. I have to marvel at both the genius of this, the boldness, and the nearly utter failure of parents to care enough for their own issue to put it to ends. The depths of depravity to which humanity is willing to be subjected, the tolerance for abuse at the hands of masters, is beyond my means of measure. It is simply astonishing.
