Iran is having an election in five days, and it appears that Congress is going to take a look at a particularly boneheaded piece of legislation called H.R. 1327, the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act of 2009.

Two links here provide the reasons why this is a VERY bad idea:

but the short version is: we don't even know who the next president of Iran is going to be (Mousavi could very well win and that would be the end of Ahmadinejad) so sanctioning Iran for policies that we don't even know will continue is ridiculous, and the vote could provide Ahmadinejad some much-needed ammunition in making his case that it's Iran vs. the world and that Iran needs a belligerent leader for four more years.

I regret to be the one to break to you the news that we want, indeed NEED, belligerent ideologues and unstable countries/regions to keep the strong military-industrial arm of our powerhouse economy, well, STRONG. Firebrands, agitators, freedom fighters, insurgents, paper pushers . . . they are ALL welcome in the big tent of the bottom line.

Really, how does the Middle East expect us to continue being the Big Spender in the region? In the spirit of we-can-do-this-the-easy-way-or-we-can-do-this-the-hard-way, if stiff-necked Middle Easterners will not open up their hearts, minds and wallets to Niketown, McDonalds, Starbucks, Wal*Mart and a car-per-person then . . . they have no one to blame but themselves . . . it's soldiers, artillery, supply lines, murder and mayhem.

How could ANY object of our affection for mall development object to a mass retailer called Banana Republic?

Barney Frank stands among those I apprehend to be Traitors.
