Carson said he has had several conversations with Trump about his upbringing in a poor, mostly black section of Detroit, which led to discussions about Trump visiting there. Carson said Trump intends to develop and promote policies on school choice and vouchers, public aid programs that can help keep families together, and potentially prison reform.

“He recognizes that what’s been going on for the last 50 years in major cities has not uplifted anybody,” Carson said. “He’s going to talk about a different way, about empowering people through education in the inner cities, where failing schools have been protected by politicians.”

The 69-year-old NBA legend and author said the only 2016 Republican candidate he saw make an effort to talk directly to the black community about solutions to systemic problems like poverty and racism was Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul.

“He’s the only one who had any credibility as far as I was concerned,” Abdul-Jabbar said of Paul. “They don’t come to the black community to talk about the solutions because they don’t have any.

I remember when Trump and his people said they wouldn't give a woman or minority the VP position because that would look like pandering. But there is no problem with appointing a man to a position to advise you on black people outreach just because of his skin color. Rand Paul would have made a better choice based on the fact that he has way more credibility with the black community than Ben Carson

If he visits there with Carson, he better wear a big belt buckle in case Carson has flashbacks.

Well good for both of them. Glenn Beck seems to be trying hard to listen to people that might not be his typical constituency these days. And actually...I'm impressed.

I agree with ^that. Rand has taken the time to actually develop relationships in the black community and not just show up when he's behind looking for votes.

I disagree with your "Rand has more credibility with the black community than Ben Carson" comment. That's not at all true. They only reason some very vocal blacks don't like Ben Carson is Ben Carson had the guts to be critical of Obama. Before that Ben Carson was (and really still is) one of the biggest heroes in the black community.

LOL. I still don't understand why Carson decided to forgive an unrepentant Donald Trump for how Trump treated him in the primary but oh well.

I think this is wise thinking on Trump's part. Dr. Carson is a good example of what happens when a young man takes responsibility for his own actions. In my opinion, this kind of strategy is better than what Rand did in the primary. Rand mostly focused on students and fringe issues and did not offer any kind of suggestion that all of America could be working together to resolve some of the bigger issues and move away from government dependency. It wasn't until right before he suspended his campaign that he even brought up overpenalization and the way it harmed the black community.

I do not support Trump, but I see that his strategy is to look strong and to suggest alternatives to issues that are very close to home for most Americans. Johnson has certainly not offered anything helpful here.

Rand has been talking about this for years.

Rand got caught up in the vicious cycle of virtue signaling to appease critics that were never going to give him a fair shake. I think he panicked with the potential CRA controversy and deviated from what made him successful. He could have been a champion for minorities without sounding like Hillary Clinton. The comments about voting fraud were especially alarming.

Indeed, Rand would have been very good in discussion of racial issues, but he did not seem connected to the issues, and his comments were ambiguous. Consider if one is talking to a regular Trump supporter. Keeping the message as simple and clear as possible and asking people to look at what is possible with less ties to government might have been better than what he said. But this was Rand's problem in general. He got too caught up in his own thinking that he could not be simple and concise.

The friendship between slim Detroit slim Carson & Crazy Don shows the problems of just running a political wonk campaign aimed at black voters.

No black person thinks Ryan or Jack Kemp are relatable.

I think Carson's goofyness was also more appealing/ endearing to white Republicans & moderates than stiff shirt Black Republican who just throws out a bunch of economic lines.

Why is it okay for Donald Trump to talk about voting fraud but not Rand Paul?
