Attorney General Jack Conway to run for governor

FRANKFORT, KY. — Attorney General Jack Conway said Tuesday in an online video that he is running for governor in 2015, becoming the first Democrat to announce a campaign to succeed the term-limited Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear.
Conway said his running mate will be state Rep. Sannie Overly, D-Paris, the first woman elected to the state House Democratic leadership. Republican Hal Heiner, a former Louisville councilman, announced his candidacy in March.
In the video, Conway said early childhood education would be the central focus of his campaign.
"Just as you can't build a house without a foundation, it's harder to educate a young person if their early years are wasted," Conway said. "Getting young children ready for school has huge benefits. For every $1 invested in early education, Kentucky will reap $7 in return. It's an investment we must make."

In 2010, Conway ran a grueling campaign for U.S. Senate, losing to Republican Rand Paul. The campaign turned especially personal when Conway ran a TV ad that focused on allegations that Paul was affiliated during college with a group that mocked Christianity and that he worshipped a god he called "Aqua Buddha."
The ad backfired. Paul denounced it as gutter politics and demanded an apology during a debate. Paul's wife called it "a desperate, shameful attack on our family." Conway later said he regretted running the ad and vowed that future political opponents need not worry about a similar-style attack.
