Right now there is a tremendous amount of anger about NAFTA. I grew up in a small Southern town where textile factories once dominated the area but like a number of communities across the US its getting wiped off the map. Although I am glad someone is saying "NAFTA is a threat to our sovereignty" its not resonating with the average person who doesn't know or want to research what Dr. Paul is really talking about. I think Ron Paul should make NAFTA as much of an issue as the federal reserve, inflation, and the Iraq war. There are a number of ways to attack it.
1. There is the obvious issue of jobs and money! Many people lost their jobs due to NAFTA and although they were able to find a new jobs mostly in the services sector, the pay is considerably less. Lower pay for workers amplifies the problem of ever increasing inflation and a weaker dollar. NAFTA helps companies prevent people from demanding higher pay, better health care insurance or other benefits by using the threat of going abroad. I have seen this happen. Whenever Ron Paul starts talking about the FED, inflation and the weaker dollar he should tie in NAFTA.
2. Second, green is in and its time for Ron Paul to use this to his advantage. I could probably write a book about all the terrible things NAFTA has done for the environment so I wont even go into any details. I just think advertisements bringing up some of the environmental issues with NAFTA could bring in allot of voters.
3. Immigration, NAFTA was supposed to raise the standards in Mexico and pay has actually fallen 25%. If conditions there were anything other than terrible why would nearly 10 million people illegally cross the border since NAFTA began. Immigration is a hot button issue right now and you hear amnesty, border fence and work visas but you don't hear anyone mention NAFTA.
I believe aggressively attacking NAFTA in different ways would resonate with many Americans across the political spectrum.
