At least one dead after train carrying GOP lawmakers slams into garbage truck

I was being sarcastic. Thomas is sane. Thomas was in the train wreck. The incident wasn't staged - that theory is being generated by the batshit crazy posters.

How do you know it wasn't staged in some fashion? Or do you believe that a truck just happened to be stopped in front of a train full of GOP Congress the day after Trump publicly pushes a ginormous transportation infrastructure spending bill? The odds of that randomly happening are astro-f'ing-nomical. Like lottery winning astronomical. The odds of those that have vested agendas and stand to benefit from $1.5 TRILLION in new spending dragging a truck onto the tracks to make their point seems like pretty decent odds by comparison, seeing as that is a small operation to pull off.

Oh well, we rarely ever agree on anything but I appreciate your thoughts, as you point out some things that help me to fashion my own opinions.

That's the rear engine there by the truck cab apparently.

Notice the line of trees behind the train and the clear grade in the fore.
It looks like it hit the truck in the bed and spun it around.

Also, quick question. If your company vehicle stalls on the tracks, how long should (would) the passengers stay in the truck? It had to have been moving, trying to beat the train.

my first view was wrong as to direction of the train.. (limited information)

But yes,, looks like the truck would have been moving..

Why could be speculated all day,, if not suicide then fatal stupidity.
Parked and sitting in it even more so.

ABC has identified the Congressman who was hospitalized today following a train accident near Charlottesville, Va. that left one dead.

It is Minnesota Rep. Jason Lewis, who represents Minnesota's suburban second district. The district encompasses most of the twin cities' southeastern suburbs, as well as slice of St. Paul.

According to CNN, five patients were transported to UVA Medical Center, with one in critical condition, though it was unclear among the injured who was and was not on the train.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said President Trump has been briefed about the accident.
"The President has been fully briefed on the situation in Virginia and is receiving regular updates," Sanders said in her statement. "There is one confirmed fatality and one serious injury. There are no serious injuries among members of Congress or their staff."
Meanwhile, an aide confirmed that Speaker Paul Ryan was aboard the train during the crash. He later tweeted his condolences to the families of the victims.

I spoke at length with an actual, real life train engineer tonight. Interesting conversation!

He didn't think the damage to the "cab" (engineer lingo, apparently) of the train fit the narrative of a direct hit and that the speed through that crossing would be at least 60mph. Based on the damage to the cab it was a glancing blow to the very rear of the trash truck. The rearward cab would not have been part of the train, rather brought from Charlottesville and hooked up to pull the train back to Charlottesville station. He was familiar with the Crozet line and said there's only ONE TRAIN PER DAY ON THAT LINE!

Anyone find it odd that Rand was heading to WV for a retreat but then showed up on Colbert in NYC only hours later?
ETA: wtf? The WaPo article I linked earlier clearly stated that Rand was on the train and even had a quote from him about it! Axiomata must have seen it also, with the 3x life threatened post. On the Tonight Show interview Rand said he wasn't on the train.

Did you read the second post of the thread?

He was doing the interview as the news was coming in.

What a shitty thing to say.

Wonder what he'd think of people saying the same when he got creamed by a van and almost killed walking a country road in Maine?

Not to mention the fact that the only person who got killed was the poor bastard riding passenger in the garbage truck.

Fucking jerk.

Stephen King claimed this week’s fatal train crash, which was carrying Republican congressmen and killed one person, was “karma” in a post on Twitter, Thursday.

“A trainload of Republicans on their way to a pricey retreat hit a garbage truck. My friend Russ calls that karma,” King declared, receiving over 6,000 likes.

An Amtrak train carrying dozens of Republican members of Congress and staff crashed into a truck, killing one person and injuring others. Christopher Foley, 28, the passenger of the garbage truck that hit the train, died from his injuries.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Rep, Thomas Massie (R-KY), and Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) were all on the train as it crashed.

King, a prominent left-wing activist in Hollywood, has been a vocal critic of President Trump — demanding his removal from office last year.

A rather thoughtless tweet from me concerning the train-truck crash, for which I apologize (if one is necessary). It should be pointed out, too, that those Republican politicians, who can be heartless when they vote, immediately got out to help.

You mean they got out to help someone themselves instead of just calling and waiting for the "proper authorities" to render aid? How dare they!

NTSB releases preliminary report on crash between Amtrak train carrying GOP leaders and trash truck

The driver of a trash truck appears to have maneuvered around rail crossing safety gates and onto the tracks, putting him and his two passengers into the path of an Amtrak train carrying GOP leaders, federal safety officials said in a preliminary report released Wednesday.

One person, a passenger riding in the truck, was killed in the Jan. 31 collision in Crozet, Va.
Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board said the train was traveling about 61 mph when the engineer hit the emergency brake. The train struck the left rear of the trash truck, causing it to spin counterclockwise and hit a railroad signal bungalow. Two passengers were ejected from the truck, which came apart, leaving a field of debris.

So, the train is going 61 mph . . .
if that is a legal speed on that section of track for an Amtrak train . . .
then the railroad crossing gate has to first go down when the train is jus' how far away . . . (?)
in order for everyone and every vehicle at the crossing stop - to just watch in disbelief as GOP leaders are being wisked out of town past them.

And, if crossing gates are easy for some garbage truck to go around
at this singular spot with 61 mph passenger trains whizzing by - it must be an anomaly (?) railroad crossing gate and light system.

Not an amateur driver there, unless the trio stole the truck.

Parked or moving?
I would like to see an overhead view..but debris is in the wrong direction,, opposite the trains direction of motion.

This train sees the truck how far away . . . gate should be down, but when does gate go down travelling 61 mph approaching this RR crossing

I'll bet not an amateur to weave a garbage truck around a downed gate,
or at least NOT lacking experience at this crossing site, the gate always goes down early - takes forever . . . he'd try it everyday

except if train is runaway at 61 mph . . . jus' sayin'
