AOC: The Perfect Republican Senate Candidate

In an article last year about the shortcomings of Republicans, I stated that outspoken Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was more conservative than the majority of Republican House members.Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC as she likes to be called, represents New York’s 14th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. The district includes parts of the Bronx and Queens.
No doubt some thought that my characterization of AOC as more conservative than the majority of Republican House members was hyperbole. No doubt others thought that AOC scoring higher than Republican House members on the New American magazine’s “Freedom Index” was just an anomoly.
Both groups are wrong. AOC is, in fact, the perfect Republican Senate Candidate.
The third (and final) edition of “The Freedom Index: A Congressional Scorecard Based on the U.S. Constitution” for the 116th Congress has just been published. Like the previous indexes, it “rates congressmen based on their adherence to constitutional principles of limited government, fiscal responsibility, national sovereignty, and a traditional foreign policy of avoiding foreign entanglements.” The index looks at ten key pieces of legislation and scores members of Congress based on how they voted. Scores are derived by dividing a congressman’s constitutional votes by the total number of votes cast and multiplying by 100. So, the higher the score the better.

This edition of the “Freedom Index” tracks congressional votes in the House on police, Washington, D.C., statehood, federal highway and transit programs, public lands, removing statutes from the Capitol, pregnant workers, sustainable energy, appropriations/coronavirus (parts 1 & 2), and the NDAA.
AOC scored 30 percent, down from the 60 percent she scored last time. The average House score was only 32 percent. AOC’s cumulative score, based on the three freedom indexes for the 116th Congress is 40 percent.
This edition of the “Freedom Index” tracks congressional votes in the Senate on waiving budgetary discipline, public lands, withdrawal from Afghanistan, semiconductor manufacturing subsidies, military spending, continuing appropriations, pre-existing health conditions, ObamaCare, and appropriations/coronavirus.
The average Senate score was 30 percent. Senators Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rand Paul (R-KY) scored a perfect 100 percent.
Twenty-seven Republican senators had a “Freedom Index” score equal to or less than AOC and forty Republican senators had a cumulative “Freedom Index” score equal to or less than AOC.

AOC is not only more conservative than the majority of Republican House members, she is more conservative that the majority of Republican Senate members. She is the perfect Republican Senate candidate. New York senator Chuck Schumer is up for reelection in 2022. New York senator Kirsten Gillibrand is up for reelection in 2024. Run AOC, run. If you are a conservative and you live in New York, AOC is your best bet for a real conservative in the U.S. Senate.

If I had to take a wild guess, in less than 30 seconds after reading the article... it would be that these Senators voted for legislation that AOC and other more conservative Senators voted against.

If I had to take another wild guess, it would be that AOC voted against the legislation because it wasn't far enough to the left.

I'd say those are good guesses. I won't check them out because I grant that you're probably right.

I don't see why it matters though. If she voted no on those bills for leftist reasons, then it's too bad some of the Republican senators on those lists didn't also vote no on those same bills for those same leftist reasons.

I would bet that you are right.

As dumb as AOC is, she does at least hold strong to some convictions, which is fairly rare in the U.S. Senate.

Which makes the title and content of the article ironic hyperbole. She is not more "conservative". She simply rebels against the establishment more than most Republicans, which would usually qualify as less "conservative". Kissing establishment ass and the status quo is pretty "conservative" in the standard sense.

I would vote for 100% of the Republican politicians on that list and contribute to their campaigns if AOC were an opponent of theirs and had a legitimate chance to win.
