Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on Monday criticized certain Democrats for failing to support progressive demands for a $15 minimum wage, contending they are living in a “dystopian capitalist nightmare” and adding that the minimum wage should actually be $24 an hour.

The New York lawmaker defended the progressive push for a $15 minimum wage during an appearance on The Mehdi Hasan Show.

“Any person who thinks that a $15 minimum wage is the ‘crazy socialist agenda’ is living in a dystopian capitalist nightmare. And we should not prop that up. We should not continue that,” she said.

“There are basic goods that people can’t afford to live on on $7.25 an hour, she continued, arguing that it is “deeply, deeply shameful” that they are having this conversation in the first place.

“Because when you take the minimum wage from several decades ago and you actually account for inflation and productivity gains to today, it should be $24 an hour,” she continued.

Democrats, she said, must understand “how deep of a compromise $15 an hour is,” noting the multi-year phase-in.

“In the United States of America, you should you know if you are working a full-time job, you should be able to afford to live,” she continued:

Nearly two dozen Democrats, including Ocasio-Cortez, are calling on President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to demand the addition of a $15 minimum wage in the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief proposal despite the fact that the Senate parliamentarian ruled out the option last week.

In a letter addressed to Biden and Harris, the lawmakers essentially asked the White House to override the decision.

“Eighty-one million people cast their ballots to elect you on a platform that called for a $15 minimum wage,” the lawmakers wrote in the March 1 letter.

“We urge you to keep that promise and call on the Presiding Officer of the Senate to refute the Senate Parliamentarian’s advice on a Byrd Rule point of order and maintain the $15 minimum wage provision in the American Rescue Plan,” they continued.

The lawmakers argued that there is “significant historical precedent” for the move, citing Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey disregarding the parliamentarian’s advice “while pushing to reduce the filibuster threshold from two -thirds of those present to three-fifths” in 1967. He did so again, they said, in 1969.

“Ultimately, Republican Vice President Nelson. D. Rockefeller partnered with future Vice President Walter Mondale and succeeded in 1975 while again refusing the parliamentarian,” they wrote.

“We must act now to prevent tens of millions of hardworking Americans from being underpaid any longer,” they continued.

“The outdated and complex Byrd rule route in restricting progress must not be an impediment to improving people’s lives,” they continued.

“You have the authority to deliver a raise for millions Americans,” they concluded in the letter signed by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and others including Reps. Ilhan Omar (R-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Cori Bush (D-MO), and Pramila Jayapal (R-WA):

.@RoKhanna + 22 House Dems call on White House to ignore the parliamentarian and allow a $15 wage in the Covid bill.

A Senate expert tells me @VP has the power do this—and it'd take 60 votes to overrule her—but that it's never been done on Byrd rule.

WH has rejected this call. pic.twitter.com/dbiFonV6cR

It should be $1000 an hour.

There should be no minimum wage. Having others do labor for you is a white patriarchal construct designed to make slaves of free persons and furries. $5000 a week in UBI! Not a penny less.

I don't see why not. It would only be about 75 trillion per year.

Did you subtract the number of white males? They shouldn't get UBI since they ARE the patriarchal shit-lords. Someone needs to keep the toilets flushing, electricity flowing and building more section 8 McMansions.

I've heard this, or numbers in this range, from a couple places.

Is this actually true, that the minimum wage at some point in the past was that ridiculously high?

If it is, then what's the catch? Because that is such a ludicrous idea, that if it's true, there has to be a catch.

Edit: Looks like the highest MW, indexed for inflation, was in the late 60's, when it was about $11.50/hr in today's dollars. So the liberals giving numbers in the 20's are either flat out lying or playing some kind of games with the data.

I don't know if these people always existed and social media brings them out but I cannot believe how far left the left is.

Yesterday standard journalists were decrying unpaid internships. And the whole white privilege and making them illegal was trotted out as a mainstream idea.

When Texas had the power issues, a company Griddy which is cheaper 96% of the time because they price things at the market instead of hedging and making the consumers pay for the hedge had a sudden spike in prices because of the supply shock. I saw not one person outside of the person who came up with the idea of deregulation defend deregulation of Texas energy. It worked like it should have.

Then I saw Jerry Jones' energy company was high fiving on their conference call because of energy prices spiking in Texas. Instead of being hailed as a hero for providing energy when there is shortage, he was universally derided and you have even "conservatives" like Ted Cruz arguing for price gouging price control laws.

I also can't get over how MANY people think capitalism is failing and the US is awful and how capitalism exploits people and business owners are bad and the people who sit with their thumbs up their ass are the real heroes because they didn't have the lucky breaks some rich white guy which enabled him to exploit the poor unwashed masses.

Welcome to the front lines of Marxist revolution.

You are living history right now.

The two huge questions right now are this:

Will the revolution succeed?

If it does, how deadly will the after action purges of "counter revolutionaries" (that's all of us here and millions like us, by the way) be?

My outlook is "probably" to question one.

The purges will be, ranked on a scale of

1 = Barking mad Pol Pot, Khmer Rouge, Cambodian killing fields, with comparable numbers based on population totals that would equal tens of millions of US dead.

to

10 = Fidel Castro's Cuban despotism, police state, third world graft and poverty.

I'd guess 5...maybe as bad as 4.

It should be $10 and it should've happened 5 or more years ago. It'll be quite a shock when it goes up the next time, because a number like $15 is likely.

It should be $10 and it should've happened 5 or more years ago.

Really?? And how do you know that? Is there a minimum effort that goes along with that? Are employees required by law to provide at least $20 of value each hour to their employer? Don't you think it's rather arrogant to think that you know better than each individual worker and employer what their value is worth to each other? And don't you think it's heartless to prevent those who are unable to provide $20 of value per hour, either through lack of skills or knowledge, the ability to at least make something while gaining those skills and knowledge?

Not understanding that you're not supposed to be on minimum wage for life or raise a family on minimum wage is the biggest danger and precedent here.
And notice how these proponents won't take anything less now because it's been propagandized into their heads that it's $15 or nothing; there's not even any debate on $11/hr., for example.

Nope. The people DESERVE $15/hr. working fast food joints and getting orders wrong when all they do is listen to you and push buttons.

AI and automation will be coming quicker than they are already if something like this grasps hold. Why pay morons and people with no skills $15/hr when you can pay a robot or computer less? Then these people will be on the streets demanding jobs and people like AOC will be promising them.

Not understanding how economics works and expecting to live your entire life on minimum wage (when it's really for teenagers and people in the process of developing skills, etc.) is really the issue(s) here.

People should be able to take what they want, when they want it. No property rights!
