anyone ever been robbed of their pm?

I've got my family all worried that I'm going to be robbed now that I have some pm. They say put it in a safety deposit box. I've been reading up on ways to outsmart potential burglars. Part of me says just leave some money out in the open (FRNs) and they'll just grab it and leave, kind of like an insurance policy against having your whole place ransacked (only it is just a one time premium). They don't care about investments they just care about getting drugs.

What exactly do you have? Most PMs are quite small, especially the bars. You should be able to get creative and find a place to hide them.

A few tubes of silver eagles, and a random assortment of coins I've collected for numismatic appeal. I have two of those red boxes that people put coins in, I'm using them as bookends on my desk and covering them with other books and decorations. I wonder if that will work or if burglars know those red coin boxes like the back of their hand? haha =D

It is interesting to note. My parents had a person rob their home a number of years ago and that person only took the jewelry box and some other items they could easily find. There was a wooden chest on top of the refrigerator with all of the good silverware in it and the person never took it. I think it is about putting your valuables where nobody would think to find them.

Clutter works wonders when it comes to hiding PMs.

Wrap something up with opaque first aid tape and throw it in the bottom of a drawer that has bits of wire and rubber bands and packs of cards and dead batteries and souvenirs etc etc etc...

Yes, I think it depends on the quality of burgular that you attract. A weatlhy woman I worked with was hit by professionals, who went straight for the wall safe.

Burglars that my neighborhood attracts are generally kids or druggies. Cameras, video games, jewelry...easy to pawn stuff.

I have two dogs, one of whom probably would bite, so I don't worry too much about it. It's easier to get in somebody else's house than mine. Plus the rewards would be higher too.

Chompy dogs-- on one hand, a real pain in social situations. On the other hand, real nice to have around.

Just think outside the box, it's easy to hide that stuff. There are fake electric outlets, drains, bricks, shaving cream cans, soda cans etc.. you name it. Your own creativity serves you best though. Spread it out though, just in case. Been there, conquered that.

Unscrew the overflow cover on your tub and insert a basket made out of a hanger. Put your sealed metals in the basket and reattach the overflow cover. Your tub will still work and not even the feds would look there. In the event the basket dislodges it shouldn't be able to make it's way through the plumbing making the metal recoverable.

Just don't hide it so well that you forget where it is and can't find it. My dad hid some things when he was going out of the country for a few months and never found all of it. We since moved out of the house so it is stil there somewhere.

What sort of thing would you recommend? I'd think it would need to be something hidden well. Anything that can be easily found, but too big to move, seems like it would invite a potential hostage situation in case the robbers would like to stick around until someone comes home.

I'll second this, although they don't have to be a pain in social situations. I have some german shepherds that are great with kids and friends. The neighbors like them too, as they recognize new faces in the yards of neighbors and make a big deal out of it. It's bad news if your dogs will accept food from other people, though. I'd say dogs are good for a warning, but not good for protection of life or property.

I have two Doberman Pinschers and they are excellent for security. They can tell if my son is coming down the road in his car from a half mile away. They are sometimes a bit of a pain though in that they will tell me something is going on and when I check, I don't see anything.

I'm very sure, if somebody came in the house while I was not there, I would come home to either find the dogs shot or the person who came in lying on the floor ripped to pieces. They are that way when they are in the car too. They just make faces at people who get too close to the car. I really hope nobody tries to get into the car without me being there. I don't like the problems caused when people get hurt because they did something stupid.

One guy said "use your own creativity." That inspired me so I came up with my own way to hide my personal messages , I mean my pm. It occurred to me, one should not follow any specific advice found anywhere on the internet. Maybe burglars go to the library to do research on how people hide things. Yes...I've told my family but I trust them with my life. Nobody else knows (except you guys). And you can't find out where I live unless you somehow retrieve the logged IP address from this forum! But hopefully because you all support ron paul you are more than trustworthy

Just hide them. Unless your storing six figures worth personal storage seems easy.

I looked around at many different types of safes. I looked at the $99 from Walmart and then the $300 gun safe. I found a very large, used, heavy safe that I could have picked up for only $1000 but it was way too large for me to move.

I ended up opting for a safety deposit box from the bank. I know some people have issues with this but for the price, you can't beat it. I figure that if the banks are going to all go bankrupt, they will prevent people from pulling money out rather than prevent people from taking stuff from their own deposit box.

I paid $20 setup fee and a $20 annual fee for a 3in x 5in x 1.5feet box

Burying PM's may be the cheapest and best solution. Especially against government intervention. The ancients did it, so why shouldn't we?

Storing PM's in safe deposit boxes goes against many of the reasons to own PM's. Perhaps it's about as advantageous to trade in PM ETF's like GLD and SLV.

A safe has many of the same disadvantageous as a safe deposit box.

Clutter does work wonders when hiding things.

Silver is a better metal to trade if things turn bad and losing a bit of it wouldn't be catastrophic.

You should go buy a small safe that can be bolted to the ground. Bolt it down in a corner of your closet. A small, thick walled safe will be almost impossible for anyone to crack in a reasonable amount of time.

It will also be helpful to hide a small camera in the closet, which feeds to a locked down recording system of some sort (that can't just be taken), so that anyone attempting to crack the safe will be well recorded.

I put mine in my gun safe and bolted it to the floor and the wall. Anyone robbing my house would probably be small time, and wouldn't want to spend the time opening it.

Just relying on the weight of a safe is not good. All they need is a strong dolly and they can get it out in a few minutes. If they want it, they should ahve to crack it to do some demolition.
