An Open Letter to Ron Paul supporters, especially bloggers and webmasters

Dear Ron Paul Supporter,

Ron Paul is already popular online. We know this from the many online polls he has won, including Slashdot's recent "Best Presidential Candidate for Nerds" poll a few days ago which Paul won hands-down. He's especially popular with bloggers. We know this from all the blog posts being written about him, his digg popularity, and high technorati ranking.

But can that online popularity translate into real-world success? To do that, his campaign needs money, lots of it, and soon. I have an idea that I think is novel, 100% legal, and could translate into a widespread show of support for Paul, both online and financially.

The idea is simple yet powerful:

GOOGLE'S ADVERTISERS CAN FINANCE PAUL'S CAMPAIGN.

Let me explain. Google has a program called Google Adsense. You've probably seen that on many websites and blogs there is a section called "Ads by Google". The ads in that area are generated by Adsense. Bloggers get paid by Google for displaying these ads.

So, let's suppose that all the bloggers and webmasters out there that support Ron Paul were to sign-up for AdSense and pledge 50% of their earnings to Paul's campaign! Or better yet, 100%! Think about it: Signing up for AdSense is free. Better than free -- Google actually pays you. So, of that newfound extra income, why not donate some or all of it to Paul? If thousands of online Ron Paul supporters were to do this, we could generate some real cash. And because it will be coming from *LOTS* of individuals, we don't have to worry much about going over the $2,300 individual contribution limit.

The Google4Paul Pledge is very simple:

"I, the webmaster of this website or weblog, hereby pledge to donate 50% of my Google Adsense earnings to the Ron Paul for President 2008 campaign, up to the limits prescribed by law."

There are actually three pledges available: gold, silver, and bronze. The above is the bronze pledge, and represents a 50% donation. Silver represents 75%. Gold represents 100%.

But let's take it one step further. We can and should make our pledges public by displaying on our web pages an image representing that pledge. This will raise the visibility of the pledges and further demonstrate the level of support that Paul has. Much like past "ribbon" campaigns on the internet, it will help to raise awareness about Paul's campaign amongst people that may have never heard of him. And it will make it obvious that this campaign has real momentum and support.

I have already created images for the pledge, and a website to explain the pledge and where to find more information about Paul's campaign. I have also created a directory of pledgers. This directory contains a free link back to your website. So all that remains is for you to take the pledge.

Participating is easy:

1) Choose whether to pledge 50%, 75%, or 100% of your adsense earnings to his campaign.

2) Display your pledge publically on your blog or website.

3) Receive Adsense payment and donate your pledged percentage to Paul.

If you agree with the idea, please reproduce it on blogs and web pages to help get the word out.

AdSense is easy to sign up for. I just did it for my main web site. It's no harder than establishing a PayPal account, and dropping in the code for your web page is easier than setting up PayPal buttons.

This is a good idea, and I am interested. But isn't the max $2300? What happens if our sites bring in more than that a week? How would we keep the donations rolling?

Its to bad we cant put Rons own adsense code on our sites, a few $100k a month wouldn't suprise me.

A problem we'd love to have....

Yes, the max that can be contributed by an individual is $2,300 per election. Note that the primary election and general election are considered separate elections.

If you are bringing in more than $2,300 in a week with AdSense, please share with me your secret. :-) I hope that this is a problem someone may have to solve.

But more seriously, in that case you can donate your $2,300 and pat yourself on the back. If you want to go further, you could redirect some traffic to other sites that have not yet reached the $2,300 amount.

regards,

Can we get a smaller pledge sign? I pm'ed you about it.

Just a thing I would like to mention, there is a site called digital point, a webmaster forum, they have there adsense set up as revunue sharing, everybody can submit there code, and it rotates on the site. Something to think about

Doesn't the google adsense fine print says that you can't post anything on your page that encourages visitors to click on the google adsense ads other than the ads themselves? In other words - you can't say - hey click on my ads and I'll give money to Ron Paul - this would encourage people to click on the ads.

Could google consider this as click-fraud?

You might get people visiting your website simply to click trough on the ads in order to make more money for Ron Paul. In reality these people have no interest in the ads, their only interest is to make money for Ron Paul. I'm not sure, but that sounds like click-fraud to me.

What do you think?

I don't think it violates and T.O.S. And yes, I did read through them. Basically, what the TOS says is that you should not encourage visitors to click on the ads. Google4Paul.org does not advocate that, and neither should any webmasters.

So Ron Paul only gets money if people click on the ads? He doesn't get any money for just having ads on the site? I'm a little confused, but this idea seems like it would be a great idea to get Ron Paul money.

google4paul.org? That domain name is bound to attract the trademark/ip lawyers at Google. I'm surprised you haven't received a cease and decist already.

It might attract them. Or it might not. Who knows. If so, the name can be changed. AdSense4Paul doesn't sound as catchy, and suffers the same problem. Perhaps FundPaul? Pledge4Paul? PayPaul? Any other suggestions?

Right, webmasters only get paid when people actually click on the ads. However, they are not allowed to promote clicking on the ads either, as Google views that as "click-fraud". So we should not promote it either. We don't want to get these AdSense accounts cancelled after all.

New name? ThePaulPledge.org?

I've thought about this a bit more, and I agree it is better to change the name sooner rather than later. The idea behind "Google4Paul" was to highlight that *YOU* as a pledger are not taking money out of your own pocket, but rather Google's (and their advertisers) via AdSense. Still, the more obvious interpretation of the name is that "Google supports Ron Paul" which is not true, and which they could rightly object to.

So, with that in mind, I'm thinking of changing the name to one of:
* Ads4Paul.org
* Pledge4Paul.org
* ThePaulPledge.org
* TheRonPaulPledge.org

I'm leaning towards ThePaulPledge.org.

What do you folks think?
