US evacuating all non essential personnel.

British evacuating Brits, too.

UN evacuating oil workers.

UN says their base has been stormed

Yep - The UN base was stormed

500 dead so far in skirmishes

UN has lost contact with base

Appears to be an ethnic cleansing

And dammit - I can't find it - one of the early articles talked about people fleeing to the UN compound, and the UN taking the position that "the peacekeepers would not get involved."

Peacekeepers that don't get involved in keeping peace. How's that workin' out?

Here's a thousand words on this subject (note especially what appear to be bullet-holes in the sign) ...

"We've" been in Sudan for quite some time.

The Horn of Africa is the new battlezone.

Drones out [of the] Djibouti [Air Force base,] no doubt.

All you heard from the American and UK bureaucrats was South Sudan independence was great... of course the country's money was tied to the British Pound.

South Sudan became an independent state on 9 July 2011, following a referendum that passed with 98.83% of the vote.[SUP][11][/SUP][SUP][12][/SUP] It is a United Nations member state,[SUP][13][/SUP][SUP][14][/SUP] a member state of the African Union,[SUP][15][/SUP] and a member state of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.[SUP][16][/SUP] In July 2012, South Sudan signed the Geneva Conventions.[SUP][17][/SUP] South Sudan has experienced internal conflict since its independence.

China is also mucking about in Africa, which of course is why we have to be there there, too. (Yes, that last bit is sarcasm.)

It's about natural resources, as always.

UN Sending helicopters in to get staff out of the base

On its Twitter feed, the United Nations peacekeeping force in South Sudan said early on Friday that it had sent four helicopters to rescue personnel at its base in the town of Akobo in Jonglei State, where, it said, two Indian peacekeepers had been killed when it was attacked on Thursday. India said earlier that three of its soldiers had died.

Obama has made a calming, stately man-speech:

"In 2011, millions of South Sudanese voted to forge a new nation, founded on the promise of a more peaceful and prosperous future for all of South Sudan's people," Obama said in a statement. "In recent years, against great odds, South Sudan has made great progress toward breaking the cycle of violence that characterized much of its history.

"Today, that future is at risk. South Sudan stands at the precipice. Recent fighting threatens to plunge South Sudan back into the dark days of its past," the President said.

Sounds racist.

Just a second here.

Are you telling me that picture is a real thing? And it's not from the movie Coming to America?

ETA:
Oh! Whew! What a relief. It IS from Coming to America.

"Recent fighting threatens to plunge South Sudan back into the dark days of its past," the President said. "Our mission is to make sure that South Sudan can instead plunge into the dark days of its future."

lol, gotcha! My cynicism is maxing out at the end of the week... so tired of political interventions and 2 headed coin of BS governments turning every square mile of earth into a shit hole.

Just as I remember them from war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This move shows how they are perceived by people in BiH and Croatia:

I remember that movie, from years ago. I was flipping channels looking for something to just watch, instead of having to be on guard with a bullshit meter, and got in on that movie after they were already in the trench with the guy on the booby trap. It was entertaining and frustrating :)

Things that make you want to yell: "Screw rules, just do something!"

Do you remember what did UN do with that guy? That is exactly what they do in real life:o. Movie depicts perfectly what UN does. I think that movies (and western "cultural trends") are partially responsible for interventionist mindset. Good always wins, evil loses, hero saves innocent children, good guy survives, evil one goes to jail or dies etc. In reality: everyone dies, evil wins sometimes and good wins sometimes, heroes die, villains die, innocent and guilty die... That is why I love those non-hollywood movies like "Better Tomorrow" (John Woo), "No mans land" where everyone suffers and dies. It is like Hollywood is sending subliminal messages (finances with billions of dollars by Pentagon).
In Sudan there is no black and white and no hero or strategy that will save the day... just sending armed men will not do much to solve violence there.

No, but it WILL put more money into the coffers of military contractors. Not that anyone in Washington is actually motivated by such things.
