Al-Qaeda not a threat to US?

Americans have such a short memory. The neocon fear mongering, "If we leave the Middle East it will become a terrorist base and they'll follow us home," is just a variation of the communist "domino theory" that obviously was proven false. Just as back then, when there was a "communist behind every bush", now there's a "terrorist behind every bush."

There's also an implication that the United States is unable to defend itself -- that unless we get them "over there" they'll show up on our streets and there's nothing we can do to stop them. So we have to "get them over there" or we're all gonna die!

If we secured our borders and focused our intelligence efforts in the right places, we'd be much safer than we are now. And the incentive for young Muslims to join radical groups to "fight the invaders" would wither away.

The best part of the story to me was the commander say we come over there so they come over here. Ron Paul may be right.

Al-Qaeda, the offshoot of part of the Mujahadeen, trained by the CIA and funded by the U.S. and Saudi Arabia via a the Pakastani ISI (all our best allies!)... why would they be a threat to US? I remember in the 80's they were being hailed as 'freedom fighters' by Reagan. *smirk*

I really can't believe how powerful they try to make them seem with the rhetoric and at the same time how utterly incompetent, ill-equipped and poorly thought out their (probably very often provacateured) foiled plots turn out to be. The shoe bomber? Give me a break! They were going to do what? With what? In an airplane head? They didn't even have passports? Do you know how long it takes to get a British passport? Go ahead, break your arms patting yourselves on the back. And now we can't have shampoo or baby formula on the plane. There's other agendas going on here (besides the naked power grab), imo.

I dont see what our being over there has to do with stoping terrorists over here. The ones who would attack us would already be over here, and already have the bombs over here. Why havnt they attacked? Because they dont exist. Al-Quaeda's power is a myth.

They could be a "threat" to us, but they can not be a threat to our freedoms. Only we can threaten our freedoms by electing "leaders" who will destroy them in the name of protecting us.

It must also be remembered that whatever degree of capability Al Qaeda has to threaten our security exists only because of our bad interventionist policies from the past... just like so many other "threats".
