To be fair, Reagan also supported Isalmic jihadis against secular Russians in Afghanistan.

Bush also supported Isalmic revolution militants against secular Saddam in Iraq.

Supporting Islamic militancies against secular/socialist type groups around the world seesms to be an established pillar of our foreign policy going back decades. When push comes to shove, people of the book seem to stick together strangely.
