Afghan soldier fires on German troops, killing 3

By ANJA NIEDRINGHAUS and DEB RIECHMANN - Associated Press
PUL-E-KHUMRI, Afghanistan -- German soldiers, just back from patrol, had already started shedding their heavy body armor when shots rang out Friday at their coalition base in northern Afghanistan. An Afghan soldier, a man they thought was on their side, was spraying them with bullets at close range.

I'm actually surprised there isn't more of this kind of shit happening. Why? Because I watched that movie someone posted a link to today about U.S. troops clearing an Afghan city of Taliban and they had a few of these Afghan soldier with them. And from what little was shown on camera the way the U.S. soldiers treat those guys is unbelievable. They intentionally send them into buildings first when they clear them, they order them around like dogs and they basically use them as meat shields.

So really, what do they expect?

And these are the guys we've spent billions to train and are supposed to be able to control Afghanistan in a few years time? Right...

To be fair, the Afghans probably SHOULD be going in first. It's their country, and they're the ones who are going to have to police it once US and NATO troops are gone. By this point, the US/NATO troops should only be backup (and by backup, I really mean backup cookie bakers back home in their mom's/girlfriend's/wife's kitchen). Then again, the ones going in first should be the ones calling the shots about if/when/where/etc. too, so ordering them around like dogs to be meat shields is still super f'ed up, so I suppose you're right. Interestingly, the guy didn't even kill US soldiers but German ones.

Hey, looks like we are impersonating Rome.

In one scene you can see the Iraqi soldier being told to sit down and lower his rifle repeatedly until the soldier ordering him actually goes as far as to touch his weapon and push it down at the barrel and then push the soldier down until he sits down and you can see it right there the resentment in the Iraqi soldiers face with a slight smirk and with a hint of anger when he mockingly repeats "sit down, sit down".

I imagine it's only through a cynical sense of humor like that, that they continue playing along without tons more incidents.

Seems like they understand who the enemy is. And when they are vulnerable.
