Advice for starting a club on my college campus

Hi everyone,

In the interest of promoting Ron Paul for the presidency, I have decided to start an on campus organization to gather support, as well as discuss and spread his ideas. The college I go to is Wentworth Institute of Technology which is prominently made up of engineering and architecture students. From the students I have spoken with I'd say it's a 50/50 split between a) never heard of Ron Paul or b) voting for Ron Paul in November. Then again, I've only talked with less than 20 people.

My question is what should be my primary focus and message. What is the best way to target the minds of these college students age 18-22. As president of the club I have the ability to put posters all around the school, host discussions and forums, send mass emails to everyone, set up booths in the cafeteria, hand out fliers, pins, t-shirts, etc. I think I have a great opportunity here and really want to take advantage of it.

The hot button issues for my age group seem to be
-legalization of marijuana
-wars overseas
-the state of the economy

Many students do not take an active interest in politics but I hope my enthusiasm and energy can shed some light on the subject. I hope you all can give me some ideas and talking points as I will be doing a lot of speaking in front of audiences. As a strict libertarian myself I don't want to blend my views with Paul's too much, but I do largely share the philosophic principles of freedom with him. So where should I draw the line there?

Thanks in advance

welcome! Youth for Ron Paul will give you instant peer access across the country, and help you get started!

You may want to name your group something more timeless like "Youth for Liberty" rather than "Youth for Ron Paul." We tried starting a group at MIT in 2007/8, but were denied on the basis that the group would not be sustainable after the end of the campaign. Now MIT has a "Libertarian Club" although I am no longer there. I have some contacts over there that would be able to help you. PM me if you're interested.

Matt

Thanks for the heads up Matt, I'm still waiting to speak with someone to get school recognition. If I get denied on the basis that the group will not be timeless I will look more into the MIT approach.

"Young Americans for Liberty" is the name of the former Students For Ron Paul nationwide network. Here is the link to YAL:

http://www.yaliberty.org/

They require you brand your group "Young Americans for Liberty" to receive all the benefits of being a chapter.

Youth For Liberty (www.YouthForLiberty.org) is a project of mine but YFL doesn't offer any major benefits yet and it is not a chapters-based entity. Therefore you can still network with YFL if you go with the YAL brand, but you can't network with YAL if you go with any other brand besides YAL. This is why YAL dominates the scene on campuses.

Thanks for the heads up Matt, I'm still waiting to speak with someone to get school recognition. If I get denied on the basis that the group will not be timeless I will look more into the MIT approach.
