The free-speech rights of a Ron Paul delegate were violated when he was arrested outside a Republican caucus in suburban St. Louis last year, according to a lawsuit filed Monday by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the delegate.
Brent Stafford, 45, of O'Fallon, was part of the St. Charles County Republican Central Committee caucus on March 17, 2012, that grew so testy it was postponed.
The event at the Francis Howell North High School gym dissolved into chaos when supporters of Paul and eventual Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney became upset over a decision to recognize just one nomination for the caucus' chairman, a supporter of then-GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum. A ban on audio and video recording devices also stirred anger.
Stafford was arrested outside the gym as he tried to gather other supporters of Paul. He was handcuffed, jailed for three hours and charged with trespassing. He was later acquitted by a St. Peters municipal judge.

It isn't just free speech. It is voter suppression. there and throughout the election. How can we get Louisiana into this? Broken bones never hurt a case.

I wonder if there's any way to get all the states' delegates in on this. Or those who were screwed over and who are willing to fight, anyway...
I know a lot of people just want to play nice now, which I really don't understand, long game or no. I wish I had a dog in this fight other than seeing my candidate get shafted.

Thanks!!!!! Very awesome.... Fingers crossed. Either way it's awesome even if it's just his particular case. But getting the ACLU to look at the entire thing would be like a wet dream.

OK... not really a wet dream. I take that back--I don't want Boehner or Priebus anywhere near those. But you know what I mean.

Good luck to them. I hope this puts to rest myth "they are private organization and are out of jurisdiction" and that they are untouchable once for all.

Excellent! We can pm DonavanJames as well, but if you can reach him directly that is best! I can go back and see who else was here from there... Suzu was, but I don't know how well she knew him. I am not sure that thread has the MO stuff because when we put it together we were talking about state conventions not the district conventions, but we have a bunch. He probably already does as well, though.

also the video from that camera about not wanting cameras at caucuses because it is like making sausage, you don't want people to see what happens there, and how Dokes was 'standing up for all of them' in not letting 'us' take over the caucus (so they would take it over instead - using police as tools to arrest those they didn't want there and to clear people out of political process where they had right as voters to be present -- think about it, it is as if a Democrat said 'too many Republicans showed up at this poll, lets hire the police to run everyone off and arrest those who won't go, so only the more Democrat heavy poll votes will be counted).

Me, too. I'm glad they're taking up an actual civil rights case. I'm rather amazed. But they tend to try to "balance" rights in a way that perverts them. Hopefully they do more good than harm in this case.
