Yeah more selling! Now what do I have...hmmm.

100oz of Copper pennies! Message me if you are interested.

You could walk into any local coin shop today and get it at $32 / oz so what just happened?

Think about it: You can still buy gold and silver in many forms somewhere around spot just about everywhere - but you can also find many exceptions - like a coin or piece of bullion selling for WAY over spot (go to http://shop.alaskamint.com/Official-Alaska-State-Medallions_c12.htm where a 1 oz. silver "medallion" starts at $109.99) and that somehow means something? Nothing 'just happened' - bullion, proofs and coins like this are being sold for their numismatic, or collectible value, which is only loosely (VERY loosely) tied to the value of the actual PM. That often includes so-called "legal tender" coins.

If you want to follow PM values strictly as a store of wealth, look at the rules, not the exceptions. The "value added"/numismatic/collectibles market is a different animal altogether. And...be aware that sometimes a large markup over spot is just a prey on the gullible - the truly uninformed, or even stupid, who don't know how to buy, let alone determine the value of precious metals.

That part is what I think happened.

Why aren't pre 1964 50c pieces going for much, much more? I think those are collectibles, they aren't making them anymore and there were only so many saved. And they call that "junk silver"? WTF?

Most of what is sold as junk is extremely worn or otherwise so defaced as to have no numismatic or collectible value. Of all the junk I have bought, it has ranged from so worn you literally cannot make out the date, up to what might be "good" condition if you were extremely generous. Coins in that condition don't have collector value.
