Your Thoughts - 401k to Money Market. (401k is currently stagnant deposit wise)

Hey All, I moved jobs and my previous job was contributing to my 401k. Now, my new job does not contribute so I am NOT currently contributing this particular 401k. (the one in question). I've already lost a few thousand since the new year in it. And it is now just sitting there in Fidelity. I...

Forced to sell my oil ETF in my 401K.

Fidelity is forcing me to sell my oil ETF in my 401K. It sucks being forced to sell something when it's down and you know it's going back up. The reason given is that it generates UBTI (Unrelated Business Taxable Income). Anyone ever heard of this? It seems like they could do this with any...

what to do with savings / 401k ?

Been reading a lot of doom and gloom lately - more than usual - about an impending stock market downturn, bail-ins, possible move to electronic money, negative savings rates, war, confiscation of gold/silver, more taxes, etc. Where would you put your money in these trying times?

Which is more likely to be seized, gold in safety deposit or money in 401K?

Just wondering what you guys think. I think it would be harder to seize gold from your safety deposit box compared to money in your 401K, but the 401K has safety in numbers. So I'm not really sure.

Is it wise to temporarily lower 401k contributions to payoff cc debt?

I am considering temporarily lowering my 401k contributions (but even if I do this I will still be 4% above the minimum required to get a full match from my employer). If I do this, I'll have a few hundred bucks every month and this should help me kill off some credit card debt more quickly...

    Are 401K's safe?

What do you think the chances are that 401Ks (or any retirement account) gets raided when the dollar starts to crash? I think it's a numbers game. A lot of voters with retirement accounts would get seriously pissed off. On the other hand an even greater number of voters will have their...

401k - If stock recovers today - Should I sell everything & pay penalties?

401k - If stock recovers today - Should I sell everything & pay penalties? I am tired of seeing the serious losses I am taking. Then it recovers, only to fall again. From my understanding of history, this means that collapse is about to happen. Better to cash out my 401k if it recovers, then...

    Would you opt-in to a 401k?

The company I was just hired at is offering a 401k through Fidelity Investments. They'll match 50% of my contribution that is up to 5% of my salary. I'm 28 now, would it be wise to opt-in or stay the hell away from a 401k?

    Cash out my 401k?

With the amount of debt our nation has, they'll eventually start eyeing our 401ks even MORE than they have in the past. I was considering cashing out my $100k 401k. Possibly on my way out of the country... What would be the ramifications of cashing it all out?

Should I rape my own 401K?

As of today, my 401k plan through my employer will allow me to withdraw (not borrow) around 60,000 of my total 401k. I will take a bit of a hit on taxes but I really want to get the hell as much as I can out of my company's 401k plan. I would like to maybe use half to do some home improvements...

    Question about 401K matching

If I didn't care about investment, or tax deferring, can I theoretically cash out my employer's contribution every year? If so, how much would I be taxed altogether (for the amount I cash out)? For example, if I contribute $300 a month to my portfolio, and my employer matches it with $300...

Annualized return on a 30-40 year 401k fund? (just take a guess...)

I'm trying to make some retirement plan calculations right now. My 401k is invested in a 2050 target fund. What type of average return do you think we will see in the stock markets in the next 40 years, less inflation? I've been putting 6% in my calculator. Think this is high? low? Just take a...

    401k with company match?

You should I continue investing in... http://www.marketwatch.com/investing/fund/rerfx The company I have has company match, that's the only reason why it even seems appealing. Should I continue invest into it, or just stay out of the 401k game all together?

Average amount of money in IRAs and 401K

I've seen an article that said that the average American has less than 3K in his retirement plan, another that said they have 15k, another just the other day that said 54K. Wonder what the average really is? What I'd really like to know is what the average retirement plan has in it based on...

Should I cash out my 401k to pay off debt?

After mortgage and monthly bills, I am spending the majority of my paychecks paying down credit card debt (totalling about $19K). I have about 22,000 in a 401k. Because I have almost no faith in the stock market for the forseeable future, I am considering cashing out my 401k to pay off my...
