awesome idea and very generous! I want to go without fail, checking so far puts the cost at about $500 or more for a flight from Los Angeles and a hotel room. Depending on how much support you raise, do you have an idea of how much sponsoring per participant you would like to provide?

I'm worried crime, specifically theft, would be an issue. I have no idea what it is like in DC.

I'd raise the matter with the principal or the at least the head of the department. A sketch of anything is precisely that, how can they grade that at all? if you turn it in you should get an A. Also, if you're a true troublemaker*, write a letter to your local paper explaining what happened...
