World's major rivers 'drying up'

Water levels in some of the world's most important rivers have declined significantly over the past 50 years, US researchers say.

They say the reduced flows are linked to climate change and will have a major impact as the human population grows.

The only area with a significant increase in water flows was the Arctic due to a greater snow and ice melting.

The study was published in the American Meteorological Society's (AMS) Journal of Climate.

Rainfall patterns 'altered'

From the Yellow river in northern China to the Ganges in India to the Colorado river in the United States - the US scientists say that the major sources of fresh water for much of the world's population are in decline.

The researchers analysed water flows in more than 900 rivers over a 50-year period to 2004.

They found that there was an overall decline in the amount of water flowing into the world's oceans.

Much of the reduction has been caused by human activities such as the building of dams and the diversion of water for agriculture.

But the researchers highlighted the contribution of climate change, saying that rising temperatures were altering rainfall patterns and increasing rates of evaporation.

The authors say they are concerned that the decline in freshwater sources will continue with serious repercussions for a growing global population.

While some major rivers, including the Brahmaputra in South Asia and the Yangtze in China, have larger water flows, there is concern that the increased volume comes from the melting of glaciers in the Himalayas.

This means that in future these rivers might decline significantly as the glaciers disappear.

Taxing carbon is surely going to solve the problem.

Propaganda piece. There's no way they could conclusively tie changes in the river to man-made climate change.

Propaganda is right. BBC is all propaganda all the time. It's the UK driving the global warming scam.

The rivers would dry up in an ice age because all the fresh water would be in the polar caps.

Hmm..Mississippi still looks mighty big from here, as does the Red, and the Cane.

Maybe that is just me?

They are above normal stage, but there has been tons of flooding in the northern states.
The BBC is just pushing an agenda.
I have a thread with an article from them on the sun dimming, when they talk about global warming.. they don't just state global temperatures rising... they state 'global temperatures rising because of fossil fuels' as if it were fact.
Their bias in news is more apparent than Fox News and CNN. I know that's hard to imagine.

Ill-informed people pushing an agenda from high above their heads. Rivers are very unpredictable. They can flood in September but be at a trickle come February, then flood again in May. Snow melt, rain, runoff, dams and human activity play a major part.

If there is a river falling in average every effort should be put to study what is causing it, instead of the new, shiny, trendy catch-all phrase called "climate change".

Human activity DOES have an impact, but it's not remote. Often rivers are low due to irrigation ditches and slews.

LOL..that *is* hard to imagine.

I haven't even been able to watch the news in so long, as it is all agenda, all of it, it seems.

How the fuck are rivers drying up if there is GLOBAL WARMING? All those glaciers that feed those rivers should have them cresting their shores. Un-fucking-beliveable how stupid these assholes are, I swear. Hey, MORONS, cooling produces DESERT-LIKE conditions!

BBC report damns its "culture of bias"

We are biased, admit the stars of BBC News

A leaked account of an 'impartiality summit' called by BBC chairman Michael Grade, is certain to lead to a new row about the BBC and its reporting on key issues, especially concerning Muslims and the war on terror.

It reveals that executives would let the Bible be thrown into a dustbin on a TV comedy show, but not the Koran, and that they would broadcast an interview with Osama Bin Laden if given the opportunity.

The UK has become living proof that "diversity" and "multiculturalism" (big catchphrases of global governance) are political weapons designed to destroy traditions, national sovereignty and cultural identity. They do not represent traditional values of equality and tolerance, instead perpetuating segregation and widening social rifts so that they can be exploited by the elites.

That's sad, too, cause I love a few of their shows. :(

My DVR is full of "How Clean is Your House?", "Kitchen Nightmares", and my fav, "You are What You Eat".

What if I just don't watch their news?? (I don't anyway)

It is sad...the BBC has been forcibly politicised into its current form ever since Blair gained office.

Yep..and, what's worse is it comes down to:

Do I support this broadcasting company at all by watching the few shows I do watch, or do I sti around in boredom for more of my day, and give up a small part of my life that takes absolutely no effort?
