A woman walked into a crowded Miami mall on Thursday and lit herself on fire as shocked shoppers watched in horror.

Cecilia E. Casals, 42, walked around the Mall of the Americas while lit and evetually made it out of the mall and into the parking lot, according to witnesses. Several concerned people who saw the amazing and disturbing sight were burned while trying to put out the flames.

Witnesses said Casals was completely engulfed in flames and her clothes were melted off, yet she did not scream. It was like a scene from a movie, said one man who had his hands burned when he tried to help the woman.

"It looked like a big fireball," eyewitness John Torres said. "I know she lost all her clothing."

Casals was eventually extinguished before she left the mall but still managed to make it to the parking lot where Miami-Dade fire rescue personnel found her with severe burns over most of her body. She was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital with what is considered life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe this was a suicide attempt known as self-immolation. They have no motive for the horrible public display.

wtf...

That takes some serious guts. I'd be a coward and just do the old bullet in the head trick, if i was suicidal. no way in hell do i have the balls to embrace the pain of self-immolation.

The monks were doing it as a protest against the Vietnam war, allegedly to draw attention to the problem of Buddha Dhamma dying out in their country. The would have been in samadhi (higher state of consciousness which means they would not be prone to the agonies of dying that way)..the posture of the monk in the photo testifies to a disciplined mind, something i doubt the Miami lady was experiencing. Probably more self-harm taken to its extreme. Or she may have just lost at the casino...

The casino at the mall?...

But anyhow, doesn't this story seem a little odd? If she was trying to off herself by catching fire, she must be terrible at it to have survived and run around for so long. It's almost like she deliberately was just trying to run around on fire, rather than actually be consumed by flames (like they do for movie stunts).

Burning human flesh has a unique smell, all it's own, unlike anything you've ever smelled before.

It is not pleasant.

Burning human flesh actually does resemble the burning flesh of larger carnivores or primates in some ways. Don't ask.

I've smelled frying monkey meat in Africa, I didn't make the connection.

I didn't notice any similarity, but then again, it's very subjective.
