Will Obama force American children to learn a 2nd language?

It would be advantageous on an economic level and satisfying on an academic level to learn more than one language. It should not be mandated.

How bout just out law spanish ...... They outlawed french for the cajun people ... Oh but I guess it was ok to do that back then but now we are a more civilized police state so it wouldn't be right.

Oh plus why would anyone need to learn a different language unless they lived along the border. Who would I talk to if I learned spanish?

Courses in a foreign language are required for college-bound high school students in most states already. As long as there were plenty of languages to choose from, I don't see a problem with having it as an integral part of the curriculum. A lot of words in proper Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese are similar to lesser used or big words in English. manifestar castigar equivocar tramitar etc German contains words that are rooted in words not often used in English as well. Heck it could help increase verbal abilities.

BUT That should be a local not a federal issue to begin with.

PHUKK Obama!

He is a pandering fool. I should NOT HAVE TO, NOR MY CHILD learn a "SPECIFIC" Language because of massive illegal immigration. IF I moved to Italy, I would DESIRE to and be EXPECTED TO LEARN Italian - same as in France etc... SAME AS IN MEXICO.

Now, this knucklehead says we should learn "spanish" because the governments lack of border enforcement?

So, I have to have my ITALIAN heritage child forego their cultural language by learning "spanish"? So, my child has to learn 3 languages? phukk that.

I am sick and tired of this hispanic pandering. Tired of it.

I have no issue and like others, encourage another foreign language - but to suggest 'spanish' in such a way, because 20+million illegal immigrants desired to break the laws is totally irresponsible and condones such behaviour.

No problem

Just hang out at any hospital emergency room and chat with the illegals coming in for their "free" health care.

QFT. Took the words right outta my mouth.

I do not think Obama ever said he would require children to learn spanish. What he did say is that children should be required to learn a second language in school. In Michigan they are allready required to do this in the seventh grade on up at least in my area. There choices are Spanish and French and this is where I have trouble with it. I think it would be a great thing for my child to learn a second language, with all the bullcrap they are teaching in school today it seems at least it is an educational class. But the language they would want to learn should come at the child or their parents discretion. I would love my kids to learn Dutch or Galeic their native tongues. Who would not want their children to learn their native heritages tongue.

So enough with the Obama is trying to forcefeed spanish down our kids throats redneck mentality. It is hogwash, he just stated it would be good for our kids to know another language. Jeesus with all the misinformation Ron's campaign got during the Primary cycle it seems like everyone would not do the typical Republican spin and attack attack attack when he was just pointing out that our kids compared to other countries fall behind in this area.

Hi,

On the topic of foreign languages, I would like to say that the majority program of teaching second languages in high school is a complete joke. To me, it just makes sense to start younger--when the brain is more open to uncovering the relationship between one word and another.

Personally, I can barely recall even the sketchiest fundamentals of my two years in French class. Remembering, I believe I recollect our foreign exchange students explaining that they had been studying English since they were 7. Therefore, these people were actually capable of visiting another country and communicating, in some cases, better than native speakers. If competency is the goal, our American education is failing.

Where language is concerned, I say, start early. Thank you for reading.

Sincerely,
Omphfullas Zamboni

illegal immigrants are cheap labor. they have more value to the corporatist government than, some what educated, mildly skilled laborers that demand a higher wage, which is what the average American worker has become because of the nanny state and its welfare, and the schools and their dumbing down of America. it might be okay for the neo cons to believe that America is still #1 in terms of everything, but we have to wake up and smell the fact sheet.

they are not going to inconvenience their cheap and effective labor force for an expensive slightly more effective labor force, so we're the ones that are gonna have to learn a new language if the Corporatists get their way. All the more reason to put a stop to this nonsense and return America to its rightful place in the heirarchy of the world. At the top, not giving two shits about whats going on below.

You took the words right out of my...erm...fingers?

*taps keyboard for inspiration*

It was a high school requirement back in the 70s, but back then we had a choice of languages from which to choose.

These days, our children can't even read, write and speak proper English. How 'bout we start by letting them master their native tongue. I'm all for learning second languages OF OUR CHOICE and because we WANT TO.

Obama is simply accommodating foreigners who are not here legally and instead of requiring them to follow the law, it's much simpler to require law-abiding citizens to bow to the illegals.

What a waste of an election!

I had to take at least two years of a foreign language (I chose Spanish) to graduate from my high school here in PA. Great experience, but I must echo the sentiment that the government shouldn't be interfering in educational requirements.

You're kidding, right? Even people as insular as Americans tend to be have plenty of reasons to learn a second or third language.

There are the obvious business applications- those who speak any foreign language, especially Spanish or mandarin Chinese are in very high demand.

If you are military, it would sure come in handy- we have soldiers all over the world, and the overwhelming majority of them are forced to try to communicate with the locals by either 1) speaking English slowly or 2) speaking English loudly. Obviously, neither works well. I wish I'd spoken German BEFORE being stationed there.

Even if you just vacation near the USA, there are plenty of places where a foreign language comes in handy- Quebec (French), Mexico (Spanish), the Caribbean (Dutch, French, Spanish). To say nothing of traveling outside this hemisphere.

I don't expect the government to force a second language, but I'd sure as heck expect it from my kids. Today, you can still get along speaking English only- speaking a second language is nice, but not necessary. However the world is changing rapidly- if you are an "English only" speaker 30 years from now, you will be left behind in an increasingly global economy.
