It might seem like a waste to some, but I've been out many times, putting slim jims on people's vehicles and from experience, I can tell you that it IS effective. I'll give you a couple of examples. I had an eye doctors appointment at noon today at a major mall near Worcester, Ma. It's about a half hour north of me - hundreds upon hundreds of cars, even during the day. So, there are people going back and forth. I hand the literature to people, instead of putting it on their cars whenever possible. It gives me an opportunity to speak to them. I ran into one lady who had just pulled into her parking spot. I handed her the piece of literature I was handing out which, right at the top (under his picture) it says "end the Iraq war". The woman takes a quick glance and says to me (paraphrasing now) "My husband and I are looking for someone who will end this war". Immediate opening for salesman Bob - so I launch in and tell her how out of both parties he is the only candidate who is saying that he wants out of Iraq NOW! So I ask her which party she is affiliated with - Independent. Perfect. She knows that as an independent in Mass. she can vote in either primary.
She also takes the time to divulge that her husband is an ex-vietnam vet and is looking for an anti-war candidate. She puts the slim jim on her dash and tells me that she will show it to her husband when she goes home. VICTORY!!!
The word "Republican" didn't set her teeth to grinding and she (and her husband) are looking for an ACTUAL anti-war candidate AND he's a vet! That means he'll tell other vets. It doesn't get any better than that!
My second reason for claiming that these little forays of mine are a success are based on observation. I spend (generally) about an hour putting these things on people's cars. That means I distribute several hundred or so. I've done this a bunch of times and I observe three things.
Observation number 1: People DO read the material. I place the slim jims between the drivers door glass and the rubber seal so they can't miss it. They essentially HAVE to look at it.
Observation number 2: People DON'T throw them on the ground
Observation number 3: I often see people actually READING them in their car BEFORE they drive away. It's an amazing thing.
So THAT is my experience with parking lots and why I CONTINUE to work them as I do.
