WHO Declares the Coronavirus Outbreak a Pandemic

The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the rapidly spreading coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, acknowledging what has seemed clear for some time—the virus will likely spread to all countries on the globe.

Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the situation will worsen.

“We expect to see the number of cases, the number of deaths, and the number of affected countries climb even higher,” said Tedros, as the director general is known.

While China appears on the verge of stopping its outbreak—it reported only 24 cases on Tuesday—outbreaks are occurring and growing in a number of locations around the world including Italy, Iran and the United States.

South Korea, which has reported nearly 8,000 cases, also appears poised to bring its outbreak under control with aggressive measures and widespread testing. But other countries have struggled to follow the leads of China and South Korea—a reality that has frustrated WHO officials who have exhorted the world to do everything possible to end transmission of the virus.

Oh, do everything possible? Is that why the WHO has spent the last month downplaying the severity? Don't panic, until panic will do no good, then panic.

South Korea is now the model for the best way to handle an epidemic. So much for all of the hubris of Trump and the entrenched US bureaucracy.

I haven't been following closely enough, do you mind specifying what makes Korea the model in how they've handled this?

Korea started mass testing to identify and isolate people right from the start. The also have a better medical system (higher capacity and technology). Testing slowed down the spread, which prevented hospital case overload like they have in China and Italy.

government mandated, single payer, universal healthcare with one of the top rated systems in the world. According to fox news that means they're all commies?

I’d say there are other factors involved other than how it is paid for. South Korea is a growing and modernizing country. There is a lot of new hospitals and facilities. They have a lot of wealth from high quality manufacturing. And most importantly they had the capability to domestically create and produce tests for COVID-19.

Many things, even if paid for by socialism, work best when they are relatively new. But with socialism, the incentive is for decay, and eventually it won’t be the best.

To their credit, South Korea isn’t as corrupt as China, so they put their new found wealth to better use.
