What nutrients do I need?

Based on eating a normal, unhealthy diet that most people do (high carbs, some meat, small amounts of fruits/vegatables) what nutrients do I need to fully function? I.E. build up my immune system, give me energy, keep my body clean, etc.

It's different for everyone. I've found that my body requires mass quantities of beer and Crown Royal.:D

If you're asking what supplements you should take, it sounds like you need a multi-vitamin with minerals, but I would suggest modifying your diet because an unhealthy diet is going to make you sluggish even with proper nutritional supplementation. I don't take any nutritional supplements and I'm not on any prescription medication and I'm 48 years old. Here's what I do almost every day:

1. I eat 2 servings of fruit in the morning. I mix this up to keep it interesting for example, years ago I took a banana and an apple with me on the road to work. Nowadays, I buy big bags of frozen fruit and blend them with yogart.

2. I make sure I drink at least a quart of water every day, preferably before 3:00 pm so I'm not up all nite peeing.

3. I snack on nuts and seeds in the morning: I like almonds, walnuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

4. I have salad at lunch time, usually coleslaw or a garden salad. You can buy them prepackaged at the supermarket if you are so inclined.

5. I snack on cut-up veggies and dip in the afternoon.

6. I incorporate eggs, fish, and calcium-rich foods into my diet as well.

7. I eat whatever the hell I want, but I make sure I don't eat past 8:00 pm and I don't overeat. So, if I want pancakes in the morning, I'll have them AFTER I have my fruit, etc.

Some form of exercise is absolutely essential. Right now all I have time for is a 30 minute daily walk (strolling baby grandson), and horseback riding on the weekends, but it's sufficient in keeping my energy level up and my weight down. I really need to do more.

There is a good chance that getting too much of certain macro-nutrients (fat, sugar, etc) is a far bigger problem.

I do a good amount of walking at work every day...
Everything you included in your diet doesn't really give much nutrition though, for example the fruit and the salads have been dead for long enough that they carry little nutrition. Basically what you eat has little negative or positive effect on your body, which is about the best you can do with store-bought food, as compared to what most people eat which is more bad then good for them.

huh???? If I were eating cooked or canned veggies, you might have a point, but I don't. I either buy them at the produce stand, or grow them myself. Almost always, frozen veggies and fruits are frozen right after picking which helps retain their nutritional value. The packaged salad was a suggestion, and I still think it's far better than no salad at all. Roughage(fiber- which is found in veggies and fruit) keeps your intestinal tract clean. Sluggishness often results from waste lining the walls of your intestines, over time it accumulates, kinda like in a pipe, and results in a thick waistline, and health problems like clogged arteries.

Alright, thanks for the info. Are seeds/nuts healthy?

yep, they have nutritional value. A quick google search should tell you what their value is. Years ago I read a book called: The Vitamin Bible by Earl Mindell, I think. I still have the book somewhere. I learned how to eat right from that book. I don't really trust supplements, so I try to get my nutrition from my food, but I'm not freakish about it. I'll eat processed food, but I make sure to drink water and eat fruit and vegetables daily. Good luck to you. :)

You need Omega Fatty Acids.

Your body requires 20 of them, your body produces 7 or 9 of them on its own. You need to fill in for the rest.

Meat, animal products (dairy/eggs) soy and hemp all contain the omegas your body requires.

Flax is good as well, so are nuts, avocados, legumes..but they might not contain complete omegas on their own.

Easy with the dairy. Modern feedlot dairies feed up to 60% corn products (King Corn). Cows are ruminants which means that they eat grass. Period.
When too much corn or other starch is introduced into the cow's digestive system, it turns acidic. This is where e-coli 0157:h7 comes from. Not to mention the liver damage that throws the omega 6-- omega 3 ratio way out of balance.

Milk in it's true form is one of two foods that people eat that were designed to be food, the other being honey.
When milk is pasteurized, the enzymes that help digest lactic acid are destroyed along with many of the vitamins, especially the fragile water soluble ones. The homogenization process is even worse. The intense heat and pressure will actually twist the essential fatty acids and make them toxic.

In short, get to know a farmer.

This anasthesiologist says protein deficiency commonly leads to death after surgeries. He says you should get about 1 gram of protein per day per pound of body weight, plenty of fiber and complex carbs, no sugar. And eat 6 times a day with weight training 4 days a week.

I use ON Gold Standard Natural Whey Protein with Stevia with milk and frozen bananas (peel before freezing).

Your question is simple, answers are hard to find.

major minerals: Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium... I understand you need at least 4 times the potassium as sodium. All the minerals are interdependent. Taking calcium can make you magnesium deficient. Drinking/eating sugar and alcohol depletes minerals.

You need to know your ph. Probably high, mine is.

I want answers to the same questions. Can anyone help out with how you can keep find ideal balances for minerals or with a way to check your own mineral levels?
