We are not fighting for freedom

What could break the heart of a member of the U.S. armed forces more thoroughly?

That's a good article...although I'd argue that his "Freedom IS free" perspective isn't entirely correct, either. After all, the price of freedom is eternal vigilance and wariness of those who would seek to take it from us...and they usually aren't foreigners.

Yes, but we tend to value something more - the rarer it is. When freedom is in abundance, it becomes like the air. We hardly notice it. Take that air away, or give it a bad smell - we do, and clamor for the old, fresh, clean air.

That's the problem with the state - you give an institution the precise ability to take away your freedom & liberty. And it will - always in the name of the greater good.

Remove the state; remove the threat.
