Trump Promises a “100% Tariff” on Cars Made Outside the US

During Biden’s term in office —-> ban TicTok
Trump, if elected again —-> effectively bans free trade on automobiles.

Ban ban ban.

“When America can’t/won’t compete, it conquers.”

“When goods don’t cross borders, Soldiers will.”

I can’t wait to see what things [cars] will cost me one year from now :questionsmerk:

When former President Donald Trump was in the White House, he proudly referred to himself as a “Tariff Man” – and he has no intention of retiring that self-proclaimed title if reelected.

Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of imposing a 10% tariff on every good coming into the US, as well as a tariff upward of 60% on all Chinese imports if he regains the presidency. On Saturday, during a campaign rally, he promised a “100% tariff” on cars made outside the US and warned of a “bloodbath” for the American auto industry if he doesn’t get reelected.

Sounds like fake news. Why are you reading CNN?

At the rally, Trump was talking about China building auto manufacturing plants in Mexico. Trump said he would put a 100% tariff on those cars.

A lot of foreign auto manufacturers build right here in the US. Those would not receive any tariffs.

The reason cars are so expensive right now is largely due to government regulations on automobiles, which apply to imported cars. Forcing environmental standards and electric vehicle standards, as well as cash for clunkers which was an Obama era policy.

More of the article:

Starting in 2018, Trump put new tariffs of up to 25% on washing machines, solar panels, steel and aluminum, as well as many Chinese-made goods including baseball hats, luggage, bicycles, TVs and sneakers – and President Joe Biden has left most of these tariffs in place.

There could be many different reasons for imposing tariffs. Biden’s top trade official recently called them “a tool for remedying unfair trade.” But tariffs don’t bring in revenue from foreign countries, as Trump often claims. It’s American importers – not China or any other foreign country or company – that pays the tariffs.

“A tariff is just a form of a tax,” said Erica York, a senior economist and research director at the conservative-leaning Tax Foundation.

Why is any president/government involved in voluntary free trade between buyer and seller?

Honestly just ban all trade. The US would be stronger than ever.

And I'm not even being sarcastic.

And fuck anyone who says it violates 'muh rights'. I 1000% support your right to secede, so really you cant say shit

Put up a 10,000 foot wall around entire country and forget the rest of the world exists

And we will have flying cars and utopia in America by 2050

Ron Paul:

“Then we get into manipulating trade,” Paul said, referring to the import tariffs Trump imposed on China that started the 15-month-long trade war between the two nations.

“We’re so far removed from capitalism,” the former congressman said. “Yet we get blamed,” he added. “Socialists come in and say, ‘See what you guys did to our economy.’”

To find balance in the markets, Paul said the U.S. needs to cut spending, get rid of the federal deficit and stop the Fed from “pretending they can do economic planning.”

The protectionists will never understand. :(

I understand Ron Paul speaks his ideas as if we were living in his libertarian utopian world. But the reality is we don't live in that world. And communist China would love to decimate our manufacturing industry and for us to be totally reliant on them.

Is it a good idea for us to be totally reliant on communist China? I don't think so. Tariffs are perhaps the least harmful approach to the issue.

Ron has spoken in favor of tariffs as an alternative to funding the government. Obviously, in Ron Paul's ideal world, we would be in a much better position if we had sound money, no income tax, no wars, and limited government with no social programs, but again, we don't live in that world.

...but again, we don't live in that world.

So what world do we live in? We live in a world where the powers that be are purposely crashing their system to force a big reset.

And they want to lead you by the nose to their "solution" to the problems they're creating.

And things will be so wide open that we won't have to go there. We could just run the lot of them through a guillotine.

Looks like business as usual will no longer be an option. So, which brave new world do you want for your kids?

I had no plans to buy any Chinese knock-off EVs so this will have little to no impact on me.

Just being brutally honest.

They are building the plants in Mexico for the Latin and Central American markets.

China is not planning to set up thousands of dealerships and corporate infrastructure and media necessary to sell masses of cars in the U.S.

Just another nothingburger. They like nothingburgers to detract from real issues.

do you have the mental capacity to follow the bouncing ball? Zoom out and think 10, 20, 50 years ahead. A Chinese company doesn't have to build their own dealerships if they simply buy out someone else, like when Italian company Fiat bought Chrystler in 2014. China Joe Biden and China John Kerry and their counterparts in congress are pushing the net zero climate nonsense so that China is ultimately in a dominant position to supply EVs to the US market.

There is a world of difference between low, uniform tariffs as a means of funding a government instead of other forms of taxation & debt, and protectionist tariffs that aid one industry at the expense of others while harming all consumers. If you're going to cite Ron Paul on these forums, you better not get it twisted.

Except that's the harm. You won't even recognize the impact protectionism does to you. It drives up the costs for the American consumer, which means he has fewer dollars in his pocket to spend on the things that WILL impact you.

Protectionists always say this. It doesn't work that way.

It's like thinking that if they take water out of one side of the swimming pool, you can just avoid experiencing any affects of that by staying on the other side of the pool.
