Trump makes campaign pledge to eliminate fed income tax on tips earned.

I dunno how this idea came about. We should be ending tipping culture, it's ridiculous and a failure for most workers. Regardless, tips are income obtained thru employment, so why should they get special exemption?

I'm in favor of anything that keeps more money in the pockets of the people and not in Uncle Sucker's.

Period.

Why didn't Trump do it the first time around?

And how would he do this unilaterally?

Ron Paul stated in his 2008 run that if we could completely eliminate personal income tax altogether if we reined in federal spending to what it was in 2000.
I'm convinced that's why he didn't do better. Most people are incapable of envisioning things being different. And if they are, fear of things being worse is what keeps them from acting.
It applies to all sorts of things besides government - hell, I ran into this a long time ago with a group of friends I went camping with in the exact same spot every year, and it was like pulling teeth just to get them to understand there wasn't a single blasted tree to hide under and it was hot and it sucked, and there's no way it can be worse.

This is probably why so few people are entrepreneurs - people generally suck at managing risk so they generally take the least risky option. Trump the entrepreneur knows exactly what he's doing - he's offering everyone a minimal risk, tiny improvement to their lives, and it's something that can't possibly make any negative effect because it's already something nobody is doing.

Taxing income that isn't part of W2 withholding puts an extra burden on workers just to comply. I'm betting that back in the day before most people started adding the gratuity on the credit card statement, the overwhelming majority of tips simply went unreported. Anyhow the income tax itself should be abolished.

Until he wins the election it doesn't matter if he does it. After he's elected it makes no difference for him politically if he does or not. This of course goes for everything he says. Something which is more difficult for a sitting president, as they could decide to do something tomorrow...

I delivered pizzas for a couple years, back in the late 90s

Payments were almost universally cash, and so were the tips.

And I paid all required taxes on that income... ;)

And now people use CashApp, PayPal and Venmo for all sorts of things like yard sales or they neighborhood kid cutting lawns. And....after promising to go after billionaire "tax cheats"....Biden decided to go after people making small payments on those apps. Which could be another reason why 20% of African Americans are currently saying they're not going to vote for him.

I am heartened by the increase in small businesses going "cash only".

20 percent of the black community not voting democrat is pretty stunning, politically.

Well I could see tips as gifts and not income and I could see it as payment for service too as income . I pay tips in FRNs not on a card, Up to them if it is to be sent to Ukraine before coming back to a biden

He couldn't. He just thinks he can because Article II of the Constitution somehow gives him the authority to do anything he wants, something that never occurred to every other president in the country's history.

Operation Warp Speed, $8+ Trillion in a single term, Federalized Local LEO Immunity and Nationwide Stop and Frisk…

I think that is an incredible trade off!

Thanks for that tip!

It’s not his job to cure cancer, nor is it government’s.

But he could and just might possibly build out a complete and total totalitarian nation, BoR be damned, and you’d be thrilled with that and would even throw in an extra $2T.

:D:p:up:

What's so sad about this is that we really are punished because of the evil of those with money and power. It is obviously wicked and wholly inexcusable for the government to be collecting taxes from the working Mom waiting tables at the local Denny's. But as soon as the government says, "we don't tax tips", every drug lord sleazeball and his buddies in government suddenly classify all their laundered money as "tips". So, because our society is addicted to cops-and-robbers (aka DEA-and-drug-lords) and since we are a wicked nation who does not actually care about the plight of the working Mom waiting tables at Denny's, we stamp her under the boot of oppressive taxation so we can keep cops riding their ego-trip and generating footage for COPS TV episodes. The correct solution is to stop trying to criminalize everything you don't like and stop plundering the poor and vulnerable who just happen to be the easiest targets to steal from. The government in DC is absolutely shameful.
