The word "Racist" has no currency any longer--Over use has rendered it meaningless

Dueling 'racist' claims defuse once powerful word

By JESSE WASHINGTON (AP) – Sep 17, 2009

Everybody's racist, it seems.

Republican Rep. Joe Wilson? Racist, because he shouted "You lie!" at the first black president. Health care protesters, affirmative action supporters? Racist. And Barack Obama? He's the "Racist in Chief," wrote a leader of the recent conservative protest in Washington.

But if everybody's racist, is anyone?

The word is being sprayed in all directions, creating a hall of mirrors that is draining the scarlet R of its meaning and its power, turning it into more of a spitball than a stigma.

"It gets to the point where we don't have a word that we use to call people racist who actually are," said John McWhorter, who studies race and language at the conservative Manhattan Institute.

"The more abstract and the more abusive we get in the way we use the words, then the harder it is to talk about what we originally meant by those terms," said McWhorter.

What the word once meant — and still does in Webster's dictionary — is someone who believes in the inherent superiority of a particular race or is prejudiced against others.

This definition was ammunition for the civil rights movement, which 50 years ago used a strategy of confronting racism to build moral leverage and obtain equal rights.

Overt bigotry waned, but many still see shadows of prejudice across the landscape and cry racism.

The rise in whites accusing blacks of racism is the inevitable result of years of black identity politics, which created a blueprint for whites who feel threatened by America's changing demographics, says Carol Swain, a Vanderbilt University professor and author of "The New White Nationalism In America."

"We need to rethink what is racist and who can legitimately call whom racist," Swain said, citing the argument that blacks can't be racist because racism requires power.

"With a black president, a black attorney general, and blacks holding various power positions around the country, now might be a time when we can concede that anyone can express attitudes and actions that others can justifiably characterize as racist."

Perhaps this is a strange symbol of racial progress — equal-opportunity victimization, so to speak.

"In 100 years, when people chronicle how America got past race," said McWhorter, "the uptick in white people calling blacks racist is going to be seen as a symptom of the end."

What????? Racism is a state of mind. It's a defect of the heart as Dr. Paul puts it. It doesn't require power to be racist. What bunk! And I always liked Carol Swain. What a shame.

What do the infamous Powers-That-Be-Many-Of-Whom-Belong-In-Prison care about BLACKS? A different color pawn -- literally, as it happens.

The Racist Card served plenty 'o purpose getting the Great Non-White Hope elected.

NEXT, in my view -- what the Racist Card is ramping up to -- is the ANTI-SEMITIC ace-in-the-hole.

What with all the wigger-y embrasure of Islam, THAT oughtta produce some fireworks.

I have read both of Swain's book on the subject

and she is fair and does a good job.

'Whites are People Too': Why Some White People are Stating the Obvious

. These whites express frustration with immigration, black crime rates, racial preferences, and demographic changes reducing the percentage of non-Hispanic whites in the population. They see themselves as the "real" victims of racial discrimination, who have no recourse left other than to organize themselves for self-preservation. Many people believe that these concerns and attitudes belong to a radical fringe. I disagree.

and she is fair and does a good job. She says that after years of affirmative action and unchecked illegal immigration, she feels that whites should be upset about being called racist for no reason

Well I am. But my issue is with that remark that one has to have power in order to be racist. To say there are no black racists is ridiculous. Try dropping a white person off in a crime ridden black neighborhood and see what happens. No power....what a crock.

Her concept of racism is skewed.

This is laughable.

We're still getting our panties in a wad over "racism", while both white and black become a minority under the new Latino majority, who, by the way, don't give a frog's fat ass about the endless hanky wringing over black/white relations.

Among THE most racist, bigoted, mean-spirited racists whose acquaintance I have EVER made are SOME black girls/women toward white girls/women who date/marry black guys/men.

FURTHER, to suggest that blacks have no power is preposterous. I give you the Chicago Mo' Mob Syndicate.

What downtrodden and beleaguered blacks don't like to admit is that they are getting screwed over by some of their "own".

What Really Divides Us? by Rep. Ron Paul, MD

Racism is simply an ugly form of collectivism, the mindset that views humans only as members of groups and never as individuals. Racists believe that all individual who share superficial physical characteristics are alike; as collectivists, racists think only in terms of groups. By encouraging Americans to adopt a group mentality, the advocates of so-called "diversity" actually perpetuate racism. Their intense focus on race is inherently racist, because it views individuals only as members of racial groups.

Conservatives and libertarians should fight back and challenge the myth that collectivist liberals care more about racism. Modern liberalism, however well intentioned, is a byproduct of the same collectivist thinking that characterizes racism. The continued insistence on group thinking only inflames racial tensions.

The true antidote to racism is liberty
. Liberty means having a limited, constitutional government devoted to the protection of individual rights rather than group claims. Liberty means free-market capitalism, which rewards individual achievement and competence, not skin color, gender, or ethnicity. In a free market, businesses that discriminate lose customers, goodwill, and valuable employees – while rational businesses flourish by choosing the most qualified employees and selling to all willing buyers. More importantly, in a free society every citizen gains a sense of himself as an individual, rather than developing a group or victim mentality. This leads to a sense of individual responsibility and personal pride, making skin color irrelevant. Rather than looking to government to correct what is essentially a sin of the heart, we should understand that reducing racism requires a shift from group thinking to an emphasis on individualism.

Nothing will really change until the sting comes out of word Nigger.

The sting has pretty much been taken out of the word w/ every rapper extolling the virtues of their favorite "nigga." It is a word that to a great extent has disappeared in the white anglo-saxon language, however has been kept alive by the very people that cried loudest against it.

On the contrary, they play it for all it's worth.

They are America's Numero Uno Special Interest, after Bankster/Financier/Racketeer Elites.

Plus, whites who are afraid of blacks (read that, who are racist) are peculiarly comfortable hiring illegal latinos to mind their kidlets and mow their lawns.

Those who think the South is America's hotbed of racism, kindly note the black/latino hiring discrepancy in the service industry, South/Nationwide.

One doesn't have to be "in power" to be racist.

It's a state of mind with the illusion of having power and insecurities surrounding that lack of it.

Fiddle de dee.

"Has disappeared" is NOT the same thing as "is censured and censored."

That it is ANATHEMA for whites to say nigger and TRES HIP for blacks to say nigger/nigga/niggaPLEASE is, on its face, discriminatory based on race i.e. racist.

So much for the fantasy the Obama's election would "heal race relations" in this country.

I don't disagree. I THOUGHT I was pointing that out.

Words matter. ;)

The TRUTH is that rural rednecks and inner city blacks have more in common with each other than EITHER has in common with inner circle Washingtonians. Ruling Elite -- which, CANDIDLY, includes among its ranks a disproportionate number of Jews -- play blacks and whites, PARTICULARLY rednecks and niggers, as deftly as anyone ever picked Dueling Banjos.

It's overused by some but I wouldn't say it's meaningless. To think that it's not a problem at all would be naive.
