I want to thank folks for providing input yesterday. I think I incorporated a number of people's suggestions.

AceNZ, I attempted to increase the emotional impact, and I narrowed everything down to 3 Super-points.

Late yesterday we received funding - and a request - to double the size of the ad. So we had to work quick. The ad is approximately 1/5 of a page and in color.

Nice ad, but being that the economy is the #1 concern for Americans I think you'd be better off with that as #1, not the war.

Sure thing linus, if you do expand it with google print ads, let us know.

I think a lot more people would donate since the reach is so huge.

what newspaper is this going to be in?

Our local newspaper with a circulation of over 48,000.

If you look at the January 10 issue online, you'll find our ad from last week on page 3.

We are currently getting quotes from other bay area newspapers, and folks from Napa and Brentwood are working on similar ads. We are going to get ads in as many papers in the Bay Area as time and money allows!

I realize I am coming late to this ad discussion; however, as a professional, I feel compelled to comment. I do hope the newspaper provided you guys with a sample of a previous application using color and superimposed images so you could check their print quality. If not, you might run into an issue.

Since this ad is being run in a newspaper, your current design carries an increased risk of compromised readability of the copy due to the superimposed text. Newsprint, as you know, has an extremely loose bond and ink tends to absorb and bleed (spread). You often lose your crispness, sharp edges and sometimes contrast. This effect is compounded when text is superimposed over a graphic. An even greater risk occurs when the text is body copy (smaller text).

The background art appears to be a low enough screen to carry the design (depending on the printing and paper quality) except possibly in the torch area. Depending on your first run outcome, I would consider lightening up the torch area for future insertions. For newspapers who have apparent lower production quality, I would consider removing the background art.

However, I hope you guys do not run into this - or any other - issue. Nice work.

Excellent! Much better than before.

If you're planning to run more ads, I think it's possible to punch it up even more. I would be happy to help.
